Central Maryland Conference

FREDERICK MD, 10/18/97 - Westminster's girls team upset host Linganore by one point to join the favored Owls boys for a sweep of the Central Maryland Conference cross country championships.

Holly Thompson and Kate Henshaw finished 4-5 to lead the winning girls team in a 55-56 victory over Linganore, which was led by Susan Ludwick's third place finish. All girls were moved up one place by the disqualification of runnerup Jill Krebs (South Carroll) because of a uniform violation.

Krebs led the entire race until she was overhauled on the main track with 300 meters to go by Jennifer Ford of Thomas Johnson, who ran a strong race after a 4-week injury layoff. Ford's winning time was 19:49 over the 3.1 mile course at Linganore High School.

Jason Santucci won the boys race in 16:30 to lead the Westminster boys to the conference title with 31 points to runnerup South Carroll's 59 and Linganore's 74. The powerful Owls placed five runners in the top 12, with Greg Fisher third (16:54) and Josh Davis fourth (16:58) also breaking 17 minutes. South Carroll's Steve McClearn was second (16:50).
