HEREFORD MD, 9/27/97 - The hilly Hereford High School course, home of the Maryland State Championship, was mastered today with record-setting performances in the Bull Run Invitational. Two girls and two boys beat the record for the 3-mile course, which is in its third year of this configuration, as runners from 80 schools and eight states competed on a sunny and warm autumn day.

In the large school girls division, Renee Berry (Seneca Valley) held off Jen Geroux (Parkville), 19:10 to 19:12, to lower the record by 19 seconds. The old record belonged to Sally Glynn, four-time Maryland state champion who went on to Stanford.

Dulaney's Greg Vincent won the large school boys race in 16:20 to shave 7 seconds off the old record set last year by Ed Tufaro (Whitman). Vincent's record lasted only 5 hours until Jon Thelen of Susquehannock (PA) ran away with the small school boys race in 16:17.

Some of the fastest girls in Maryland this year are in Class 2A, and several of them squared off in the medium school race in a partial preview of the state championship on the same course 6 weeks hence. Suzy McCullough of Centennial was the clear winner this time in 19:31, 28 seconds ahead of Kate Frande of Mt. Hebron. Middletown freshman Randy Buzzell, owner of the state's fastest time this year, led through the first mile in a swift 6 minutes, but McCullough closed the gap by mid race and won comfortably. Buzzell, bothered by a sprained ankle suffered Friday and by huge blisters on both feet, faded to seventh.

Large Schools - Westminster (MD) knocked off powerhouse Lake Braddock (VA), 64 to 69, in the large school boys competition and got third in the girls race. Virginia transplant Jason Santucci led the Westminster boys with a second place finish (16:57) and Greg Fisher was only 2 seconds behind in 4th. Other Owls were 13, 18, and 27. Westminster's girls placed between 13th and 43rd, led by Katie Hinshaw (21:16). Lake Braddock won the girls crown over Severna Park, 70 to 107, with five finishers between 4th and 30th, led by Amy Montemerlo (20:17).

Medium Schools - Linganore (MD) won the medium school girls easily and was second in boys. The girls trophy represented a team victory with the winners placing between 4th and 26th, led by Susan Ludwick (20:41). The Lancer boys built their runner-up position on a 4-5-7 showing by Craig Samoviski, Scott Herrick, and Eric Necciai. But Loyola (MD) edged Linganore 77 to 81 behind individual winner Chris Knott (17:05).

Small Schools - The boys team trophy was a squeaker between Pennsylvania schools. The difference between Thelen of Susquehannock (1st) and Jared Sullivan of South Western (2nd) was the difference in the team score too, as Susquehannock edged South Western, 64 to 65. Mount de Sales (MD) ran off with the girls trophy with 43 points, the best team score of the day, behind individual winner Jenn Aversa (20:41).

Meet directors Mike Kalisz and John Roemer were pleased with the turnout and said they were considering a seeded format next year to allow an elite division regardless of school size.
