Frank Keyser Invitational

Girls Varsity

BOONSBORO MD, 9/20/97 -- Middletown freshman Randy Buzzell ran the fastest girls race of the season in Western Maryland (18:31.1) to lead Middletown to victory in the 20-school Frank Keyser Memorial Invitational cross country meet over Boonsboro High School's 3-mile course. Southern Garrett won the boys team championship.

Buzzell took a 2-1 lead in the budding rivalry with North Hagerstown's Kari McCarty (19:03.8) by leading from beginning to end for a 32-second margin. Molly Imming was 9th for Middletown, followed by two more frosh, Jessica Bisnett and Laura Pumphrey, in 14th and 15th places and Murissa Normoyle in 30th for the Lady Knights.

Southern Garrett boys are a perennial 1A power, but coach Carl Booth declared this his best team ever after his five winning boys ran in a 35-second pack from 4th to 16th. Dan Sincell (16:54.1) was Southern's leader as his team confirmed their victory over 17 larger schools a week ago in the Mount St. Mary's Invitational. Showing their depth, Southern Garrett's sixth man placed 22nd, making it six runners under 17:50.

Ryan Campbell of Walkersville was the boys individual winner in 16:44.5, benefitting from Alex McAbee's bad luck. McAbee (North Hagerstown) had a convincing lead with 200 meters to go when he took a wrong turn. By the time he recovered, he was in third place. North Hagerstown was further handicapped by the temporary loss of Mike Lum and Johnavin McKinley to injuries.
