Comments from Afar (New Jersey)by Ed Grant Netters: A few comments on the Footlocker Finals from afar: Considering the weather and the state of the course, it should be no surprise that both winners from from New England. They get pretty used to wet, slippery course up there. Erin Sullivan certainly seems destined to be a new force in U.S. distance running if she will only give up her soccer hopes. To be just two minutes behind Mohamud, and in what is reported to be worse weather, is some accomplishment. She might even threaten Cath O'Brien's VCP record at next year's Footlocker trials. New Jersey is very proud of the 1-9-17 finish of its threesome. Steve Slattery, burned at the trials by contesting the lead with Mohamud, took a different tack this time---though pretty much the same one he followed in last year's final---and worked his way up, using his 50-flat 400M speed to pass several runners in the stretch and finish 4th. Campbell had hoped for a better finish than 9th, but he is still a novide in bigtime competition and has next year to look forward to. Hahn had only faint hopes of qualifying when the season started, but ran well in every race and his physical strength no doubt was a factor in his finish today. Ed Grant
