Date: 04 Jun 97 23:18:40 EDT From: "Edward J. Grant" [email protected] Subject: t-and-f: NJ Alll-Group (Long) Netters: The New Jersey scholastic season ended this evening inalmost perfect weather conditions (contrary to advance predictions) with oustanding performances from shot-putter Kevin DiGiorgio of Bayonne and all-around rnning star Fred Sharpe of Paulsboro. DiGiorgio, whose state "record" of 68-7 1/4 had caused some controversy in the gr. IV meet last Saturday because it was esimated rather than exactly measured (His throw hit a wooden block used as a bounday for the rather confined shot put area), this time left no questions with tosses of 68-10 and 68-111 on an expanded area. Three junior topped 60-feet in the competition, Jon Kalnas of Paulsboro llifting his PR to 54-10 1/4 and Keith Rzewuski of St. Joseph, metuchen, passing the barrier for the first time at 60-7. Sharpe had a simply incredible evening. He opened with a 51.62 win over Penn relays IH winner Greg Christie of Perth Amboy, followed that about an hour later with a 4:15.73 for 3rd in the 1600M and finished off witha 1:53.50 win in the 800M. Sharpe is also a junior, but in his fourth year of HS and thus inelgible to compete next year. The girls had nothing to match these heroics, but Aleah Williams of Montclair bucked a slightwind for an 11.91-24.18 sprint double, teammate Mikele Barber took the 400 in 54.05 and Charmaine Walker of Plainfield took the 100H in 13.67. The night ended with a rousing 1600R which saw Natalie Defenbaugh of Columbia make up a full yard with her last two strides in the girls' race for a 3:49.70 victory over Willingboro and Tyrone Ross run a 47.2 anchor to give Metuchen a come-from-behind 3:15.15 win over Camden. BOYS 100M: Football star John Stone of Mainland outclassed the field with a 10.69 win over another gridiron ace, Cooper Rego of St. Joseph, Montvale, in 10.69. 1-Stone 10.69. 2-Rego 10.90. 3-Eric McCoo, Red Bank 11.02. 4-Hakim Johnson, Elizabeth 11.07. 5-Jeremy Cooper, Kingsway 11.08. 6-Jason Flagg, Pemberton 11.08. 200M: It was Stone again here by a wide margin over SouthJersey rivals Scott McCray of Camden and Louis Smith of Burlington Twp. 1-Stone 21.59. 2-McCray 22.11. 3-Smith 22.22. 4-Johnson 22.30. 5-Farod James, Newark central 22.33. 6-Flagg 22.38. 400M: Ross repeated easily here with the best time in the state this year, 47.48. 1-Ross 47.48. 2-Charlz Hester, Toms River South 48.09. 3-Chris Harris, Franklin 48.79. 4-Christie 49.05. 5-Stephon Mark, Snyder 49.19. 6-Geoff Valentine, Williamstown 49.25. 800M: This was to be a race between Sharpe and Ryan Smith of Morristown. However, Smith ran into trouble at the start, buming into another runner and was far back when the field hit the backstretch. He made up a lot of ground on the backstretch oif the second lap, but the effort cost him and he faded in the last strides and lost 2nd to Tom Redmond of Bergen catholic. Sharpe had gone out in 52.0 and was also tiring at the end. 1-Sharpe 1:53.50. 2-Redmond 1:54.20. 3-Smith 1:54.34. 4-Scott Lipford, ocean City 1:54.74. 5-Wayne Riley, Willingboro 1:55.17. 6-Cavrel Silvera, Fort Lee 1:55.87. 1600M: The key move in this race came when Karl Savage of Eastern charged into the lead on the third lap, allowing Matt Elmuccio of Westfield and Steve Slattery of Mt. Olive to feed off hi. Sharp went by 1200 in 3:10, but was passed on the final turn by the other two. Sharpe, conserving energy in fourth place, came on to take third but did not get near the leader. Elmuccio's win was his 3rd in a row in the race and his time, 4:11.25, the best of his career. Slattery a junior, ran a PR 4:12.90. 1-Elmuccio 4:11.25. 2-Slattery 4:12.90. 3-Sharpe 4:15.73. 4-Savage 4;16.05. 5-Brian bennett, Christian brothers 4:16.27. 6-Rick Gibson, Ridge 4;17.13. 3200M: Adam Daniels of Seton hall knew he had to remove the sting from the kick of Overbrook sophomore Murad Campbell, but failed to do it with a series of midway 70-second laps. Campbell cruised along in third or fourth most of the way, then moved up, took the lead ion the final turn and won compfortably in 9:15.66. The splits were negative: 4:40-4:35. 1-Campbell 9:15.66. 2-Daniels 9:18.47. 3-Ed Letts, Middle Twp 9:19.12. 4-Jon Fasulo, Hunterdon Central 9:20.87. 5-Tom DelSordo, Morristown 9:21.25. 6-Karl Savage, Eastern 9:24.36. HH: This was a repeat of the indoor Eastern meet with Todd Matthews of Notre Dame just nipping Sultan Tucker of Delsea in 13.65 (-1.5 wind). 1-Matthews 13.65. 2-Tucker 13.66. 3-Scott McCray, camden 14.04. 4-Charles Oglesby, Egg Harbor 14.32. 5-Mike Aguilar, Lakewood 14.35. 6-Curtis Custis, Bridegton 164.64. His time was 4th-best in NJ history. 1-Sharpe 51.62. 2-Christie 52.59. 3-David Rose, Livingston 53.72. 4-Andy Carson, Woodbury 53.84. 5-Joe Lewis, Pleasantville 53.98. 6-Shawn Mayer, Hillsboro 54.10. HJ: This was a battle of basketball-playing Reggies: Garrett of Franklin and Williams of Highlands. Both cleared 7-0, but Garrett won on fewer misses.
