PIKE WINS FIRST GIRLS TRACK & FIELD CHAMPIONSHIP

Arlaina Davis of Lawrence Central swept the sprints and Lutisha Shittu of Gary Wallace won both hurdles and anchored the winning 400 meter relay team to highlight the 24th Annual IHSAA Girls Track & Field State Finals June 7 at North Central High School in Indianapolis.

Competing in cloudy and cool conditions with a mist at times, Pike edged Gary Wallace for its first team state championship. Four points down to Gary Wallace going into the final event, Pike needed a finish of fifth or better in the 1600 meter relay to better the Hornets who were not entered in the event. Pike delivered with a fifth-place finish that was good for five points and the team title by a 47-46 margin.

Carmel finished third in the team competition with 34 points, followed by Lawrence Central with 33 and Michigan City with 31.

Individually, the night belonged to Davis and Shittu. Davis opened the evening with a 12.17 clocking in the 100 meters, followed by a 55.42 in the 400 meters and closed with a 24.95 in the 200 meters. She also ran a leg on Lawrence Central's 1600 relay unit that finished seventh.

A senior, Davis is the first athlete to sweep the 100, 200 and 400 titles since Maicel Malone of North Central (Indianapolis) in 1987. Davis finished her career with five individual IHSAA state titles. She won 400 meter titles in 1995 and 1996 to go with tonight's victories. She also was the state runner-up in the 100 meters and 200 meters in 1996.

Shittu closed her high school career with double victories in the hurdles. She turned in a 14.21 in the 100 hurdles to win comfortably over Monica Davis of North Central (Indianapolis), and was clocked in 43.90 to win the 300 hurdles over junior Sylvia Thomas of Michigan City. Shittu also ran the anchor leg in the 400 relay as Gary Wallace nipped rival Gary West Side by .16 with a winning time of 48.32.

Shittu won both hurdles events in 1995, and finished as the state runner-up in both last year.

Three sophomores won the other running events: Amanda Bell of Clarksville in the 1600 meters in 4:58.57, Molly Widman of Fort Wayne Snider in the 800 meters in 2:15.35, and Nicole Williams of Westview in the 3200 meters in 10:53.42.

Leading the list of field event champions was Denise McDonald of Pike in the shot put. The senior won the title in dramatic fashion with a 130-9 effort on her final throw to give the Red Devils their only individual title. Other field event champions were senior Kymberly Brooks of Benton Central in the discus with a 130-9, sophomore Danielle Kerr of Pioneer in the high jump at 5-7 and freshman Jan Eichenauer of Wabash in the long jump at 18-61/2.

DAVIS HONORED WITH MENTAL ATTITUDE AWARD -- Arlaina Davis of Lawrence Central, who won three individual state titles tonight and five for her career, was selected by the IHSAA Executive Committee as the 1997 recipient of the Mental Attitude Award in Girls Track. Davis ranks in the top 25 percent of his senior class, served a president of the school's Key Club and has been an active community volunteer. She plans to attend Arizona State and major in sports medicine. Farm Bureau Insurance, corporate partner of the IHSAA, will present a $1,000 scholarship in the name of Davis to Lawrence Central High School.

ANOTHER SHURR TITLE -- Amy Shurr, a senior at Valparaiso, ran the third leg on the Vikings' winning 3200 relay team. Shurr also is a two-time IHSAA girls diving state champion and was a junior guard on Valparaiso's 1996 IHSAA state runner-up girls basketball team.
