Frederick, MD, 5/1/97--The 10th Central Maryland Conference track championships averted a thunderstorm, but couldn't
avoid a May Day assault on the record book. Eleven meet records (MR) fell and nine new Best of the West (BW) leading
marks were posted as Frederick and Thomas Johnson HS stars shone brightly.
Frederick's powerful and swift girls won their third straight conference championship and TJ boys their first ever.
How do you choose between Frederick's senior sprinters Valerie Williams and Michelle Higginbottom? They ran side by side the entire length of the 100 meter dash and finished in the same 11.9 time (MR, BW #1 tie), with Val getting the visual nod for first place. That was symbolic of an evening when one athlete after another vied for attention.
For example:
 | Williams -- three more wins with a 19-5 long jump (MR), 40-4 triple jump, and a sensational come from
behind anchor leg in the 4x100 relay.
Higginbottom -- won the 200 in 25.1 (MR, BW #1) and the 400 in 58.7 (BW #1), the first 400 in Western
Maryland below one minute this season.

Mardy Przywarty (Frederick) -- the third jewel in the Cadet girls crown, won both hurdles, the 100 in
14.8 (MR, BW #1, first BW under 15.0 this year) and the 300 in 47.4 (MR).

Keith Jenkins (Frederick) -- a 47-0 triple jump (MR, BW #1) after dark made the coaches' wait for meet
results entertaining. This is the best triple jump in Western Maryland in years and is second in the state this
year (Andy Bilmanis of Thomas Stone was second in the Penn Relays with 48-8.75).

Randal Jones (TJ) -- the Naval Academy bound three-sport star owned the boys hurdles with 14.0 in the
110 (MR, BW #1) and 39.6 in the 300 (MR, BW #1, first BW under 40 seconds this year).

Adrian Ellis (Frederick) and Pat Chittchang (South Carroll) -- took turns toppinng each other
in the high jump and long jump. Chittchang won the long jump in 22-3 (MR, BW #1) with Ellis second at 21-11. Both
got 6-4 in the high jump (MR tie and BW #1 tie), but Ellis had no misses and claimed first place.

Jonathan Hayes and Erik Necciai (Linganore) -- finished in a virtual dead heat 4:26.1 in the
1600 (BW #1) with Hayes getting the blue ribbon.

A. J. Waldon (Frederick) -- a triple in the sprints almost got overlooked, but his 100 meter time of
10.8 is a new BW #1 and first under 11 seconds this season.
