 Highlights:

Middletown used the same formula of depth that has worked all season to win

the boys title and remain unbeaten in Western Maryland. The girls race

was closer than expected, but the Frederick girls still won their third

 straight county title as expected.

Middletown was led by Brett Embrey and Darren Wolf, who upset favored

stars in the 300 hurdles and the 800. Embrey caught Best of the West #1

Randall Jones of Thomas Johnson in mid stretch and nipped him at the wire

in 40.6 to 40.8. In the 800, Justin Griffee of Thomas Johnson sprinted

to a big lead with a 55 second first half, but Wolf ran him down on the far

turn and won going away in 1:58.5 (BW #2). BW leader Chris Willis of

Walkersville faded to fifth, most likely drained from a 1:56.5 anchor leg

in a game but unsuccessful effort to catch BW#1 Linganore in the 4x800

 relay earlier.

Freshman Richard Levy was Middletown's only other individual winner (12-0

PR in pole vault) as the Knights overcame Frederick's five first places by

scoring 10 seconds and getting multiple points in seven events. Derek Dye

had three seconds (HJ, LJ, TJ) and Evan Routzahn two (SP, DI). Middletown

has now won every meet this season except for a second in the 30-team

 Woodward Relays in Bethesda.

Troubles began early for the Frederick girls when sprint stars Michelle

Higginbottom and Valerie Williams were both disqualified from the 100,

Michelle in the semis and Valerie in the finals. This opened the door for

Kathy Messner of Catoctin to win the race in 12.3, four tenths slower than

the BW-leading 11.9 shared by Higginbottom and Williams.

Messner went on to upset Williams in the long jump with a meet record PR

19-4.25, and she added another meet record with a 5-7 high jump.

But the Frederick Girls' overall strength preserved the team victory with

seven winning events. Linganore won only two events but scored in 15 for a

strong second place as the Lancers signalled they may return to power

 next season.

Second year school Urbana was a strong fourth in the girls behind a meet

record 4x800 relay ( 9:47) and a double by Liz Lowrie in the 1600 and 3200

 (BW#2 5:24.6 and 12:08.9).

Other multiple winners were Vince Gray of Catoctin (100 and 200), Sean

Allen of Walkersville (1600 and 3200), Adrian Ellis of Frederick (HJ and

LJ), and Higginbottom (200 and 400).
