 Highlights:

Brett Embrey and Derek Dye led the favored Middletown boys to victory with

two wins apiece. Embrey won both hurdles (14.8 and new Best of West #1

40.7) in close races over Hunter Cross of North and Ben Jones of

Smithsburg. Dye won the high jump and long jump (6-0 and 19-10.5), while

adding eight more points in the triple jump and high hurdles. Middletown's

pole vaulters got 3rd, 4th, and 6th to Walkersville's 5th for an unexpected

9-point gain.

Freshman Michelle Primous of Smithsburg continued her rise in the girls

sprint ranks as she won the 100 (12.4) and 200 (new Best of West #1 25.5)

to pace the Smithsburg girls. Smithsburg also won three of four relays to

overcome Catoctin's six individual wins-- star Kathy Messner's 38 points

(winning the HJ, LJ, TJ and second in the 100), Jana Romlein's hurdles

 double (15.6 and 46.6), and Krissi Olsen's 1600 score (5:37.1).

Kari McCarty of North Hagerstown made her season debut with a new Best of

 West #1 11:31 in the 3200.

The meet was delayed an hour by a thunderstorm, which pushed the boys

triple jump deep into the night. It was worth the wait as Cross, Dye and

Chris Markin of Catoctin went at it head to head. After four jumps, Cross

led Dye by an inch at 39-11. Then Markin and Cross traded leads on four

straight jumps until Cross pulled it out with 40-6 on the last jump to edge

  Markin by four inches.

Other hot contests were the boys 800 and 200. In the 800, Chris Willis of

Walkersville recorded his second sub-two minute time in a week in 1:57.8,

a new Best of the West leader, but he was closely contested by Darren Wolf

of Middletown. Wolf challenged the frontrunning Willis and appeared ready

to take the lead in mid-stretch, but Willis summoned a last surge to seal the win.

In the 200, Randy Hoffman of Smithsburg shaded Vince Gray of Catoctin with

both clocking the same 22.7 time.

Sean Allen of Walkersville doubled in the 1600 (4:31.5) and 3200 (10:10.2).

Troy Bigelow of Boonsboro broke the 150 foot barrier in discus with a new BW

leading 150-5, even though prior BW leader Evan Routzahn of Middletown upped his

season best to 146-9.

Mike Mullendore of Boonsboro became the first area pole vaulter to reach 13 feet

this season as he won the duel with prior BW leader Damian Kolbay of Walkersville.
