Middletown, Fort Hill Boys Tie; Catoctin Girls Win Big

Hagerstown MD 2/7/97 -- Middletown and Fort Hill battled to a 72-all tie in the boys competition as a correction in the pole vault scoring wiped out an apparent 1/2 point win by Fort Hill. Catoctin had no uneasy moments rolling up 104 points to win the girls championship.

Five pole vaulters cleared 10-6 for a nominal tie for 6th place. Initial scoring under a 1997 rules change had Middletown and Boonsboro sharing the 6th place point, taking into account fewest misses but not fewest attempts. The rule change eliminating fewest attempts as a tie breaker in pole vault does not take effect, however, until the 1997 outdoor season. The correction by meet director Hal Grau--using fewest attempts as a tie breaker--gave Middletown the whole point for sixth place.

The pole vault correction came after Fort Hill apparently salvaged a narrow victory with dramatics in the closing 1600 meter relay. Fort Hill's 8 1/2 point lead was in jeopardy with Middletown favored to win the relay and Fort Hill unseeded. But Bobby High, normally a distance runner, was substituted on the Fort Hill team, and High ran a gritty anchor leg to win the slow heat in the last strides. That gave Fort Hill 2 points, protecting the lead against Middletown's 10-point score moments later in the fast heat (3:42.1). Before the Allegheny County squad had time to celebrate, however, the scoring error was being debated.

In addition to the 1600 relay, Middletown got blue ribbons from Matt Covati in the 300 (37.9) and Derek Dye in the high jump (6-3). Fort Hill's winners were Bobby High in the 1600 (4:38) and the 800 relay (1:36.8).

Kathy Messner won four individual events to lead Catoctin to the girls crown: 55 (7.3), 300 (41.6), 500 (1:25.6), and high jump (5-6). Catoctin also won the 3200 relay (10:28.1). Liz Lowrie of Urbana was a triple winner with easy victories in the 3200 (11:59.4) and 1600 (5:25.9) and a one second victory over Kris Olsen (Catoctin) in the 800 (2:29.4).

Smithsburg 66, Boonsboro 62 and Walkersville 59 were also in contention for the boys team title throughout the evening. Walkersville suffered from the loss of two academic casualties, sprinter Nick Brown and distance runner Sean Allen, who would have been 1-2 picks in four races. The rest of the boys team results were Clear Spring 23, Bethesda-Chevy Chase 19, Catoctin 16, South Hagerstown 8, and Urbana 5.

Smithsburg edged out Middletown 61 to 60 for runner-up in the girls standings, followed by Urbana 49, South Hagerstown 38, Boonsboro 37, Fort Hill 19, Bethesda-Chevy Chase 13, Walkersville 13, Mount Savage 6, and Brunswick 3.
