Maryland Performers at National Scholastic Indoors

Reggie Lewis Center - Boston MA - March 8-9, 1997

Around 80 high school athletes represented Maryland at the National Scholastic Indoor Track and Field Championships, held March 8-9 at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center in Boston, Massachusetts.

The outstanding Maryland performer was High Point sophomore Ato Modibo, who won the 400 meter dash in 48.07, confirming his arrival as one of the top stars in the state. Modibo also led the High Point relay teams to the state's best showing in relays, getting 12th overall in 4x200 (1:31.35) and 8th overall in 4x400 (3:23.82).

Bernard Williams of Carver was second in the finals of the 60 meter dash (6.81) and fourth in the finals of the 200 meter dash (21.99), and Nyjla Littlejohn of Wilde Lake made the awards stand with a sixth in the 60 meter high hurdles final (8.76).

KC Allen of Calvert led a four-girl contingent in the emerging girls pole vault event. KC tied for fifth at 9-6, equalling the state record set by Kate MacFarlane of Hereford in the Maryland championships just two weeks ago. Allen, Natalie Dye of Middletown (8-6, tie for ninth), and Tenisha Chester of Atholton (8-6, tie for ninth) were among the 11 finalists introduced to the crowd midway in the competition. After going out, they all waited to watch Massachusetts stars Samantha Shepard and Melissa Feinstein go all the way to 12 feet. The 13-year-old Shepard, not yet in high school, beat her older teammate on misses, although neither could top Feinstein's national high school record 12' 5.5" set just one week before at the USA Indoor Championships.
