Defending national girls champion Erin Sullivan was upset by Jillian Mastroianni, who toured the 5k Van Cortlandt Park course in 17:54.2.    Massachusetts stars Andy Powell and Frank Sanchez finished 1-2 in the boys race, just as John Molvar predicted, with Powell a decisive 18-second winner in 15:23.2.

Championship Girls - Jericho VT sr Sullivan grabbed a big early lead and was still ahead after 2 miles in 11:45, but was being stalked by Cate Guiney, Jillian Mastroianni, and Erin Donohue.  Sullivan faded to 6th and her time (18:15.3) was 44 seconds slower than her winning time a year ago.  Sayville NY jr Mastroianni, on the other hand, ran only one second better than last year's fourth place finish, and this year it was good for a 13-second victory over Haddonfield NJ so Donohue.  The latter was 2 seconds better than the New Jersey all-group champion, sr Cate Guiney of Red Bank.

In the next 20 seconds came the rest of the qualifiers for nationals in Orlando:    sr Sheela Agrawal of Swansea MA, sr Elizabeth Churchville of King of Prussia PA, Sullivan, sr Sheila Klick of Lansdowne PA, and sr Cheryl Bauer of Rockaway NJ.   Marblehead MA jr Shalene Flanagan had the 8th and last qualifying spot until 30 meters from the finish line, when she staggered and fell.  She tried to get up, but fell again.  Then she crawled hands and knees in excruciating slow motion to the finish line as passing runners bumped her down to 20th.

New York won the state team championship in a tie breaker over New Jersey.

Championship Boys - After a mile in 4:44, the pre-race favorites were heading a big pack - sr Louie Lucchini of Ellsworth ME, sr Murad Campbell of NJ, sr Powell of Oliver Ames MA, and sr Frank Sanchez of Lynn MA.  Campbell, who has been plagued with shin splints recently, dropped out after 2 miles, just as he had three other times this year.  Powell then opened up daylight on Sanchez, who held second.

The next six runners were all 2-3 seconds apart as they earned a trip to Orlando:     jr Aaron Emery of Croghan NY, sr Daniel Tebbano of Clifton Park NY, sr Nate Miller of Erial NJ, Luchini, sr Jon Fasulo of Whitehouse Station NJ, and sr Tom Parlapiano of Honeybrook PA.  New York state champion Dylan Welsh was left out in 12th place.

Massachusetts won the team title, 48-50 over New York.
