Netters:
A major upset today in the girls' race at the Northeast Footlocker
trials as defending national champion Erin Sullivan barely qualified for
this year's race, finishing 6th in 18:15 after setting the pace for most of
the race.
There was no surprise in the boys' race where Massachusetts enjoyed
a 1-2 finish with Any Powell and Franklyn Sanchez. Powell was an easy
winner in 15:23.2.
Jillian Mastoianni of Sayville, NY, won the girls' race in 17:54.
New Jersey led the way in qualifiers with three in the girls' race
and two in the boys. Erin Donohue of Haddonfield, taking a day off from
preparation for the upcoming basketball season, was 2nd to Mastroianni in
18:07and state champ Cate Guiney of Middletown South finished 3rd in 18:09.
Cheryl Bauer of Morris Hills got the 8th and last qualifying place when she
passed fallen Shalane Flanagan of Marblehead, Mass., just before the finish
line.
In the boys' race, NJ had state champ Nate Miller of Highland in
5th polace and Gr. IV champ Jon Fasulo of Hunterdon Central in 7th.
National outdoor 2M champ Murad Campbell of Overbrook was with the leaders
when he dropped out at the mile and a half mark, heading into the back
hills.
