GIRLS: Defending national Foot Locker girls champion Erin Sullivan shrugged off her 6th place finish in the Northeast Region and proved again she is superb at rising to the occasion.  She led from start to finish, holding off hard charging Lauren Fleshman and Sara Bei by 7 seconds.  Of the California pair's late rally, Harrier Magazine editor Marc Bloom said on the High School Runner web site: "without their accustomed hills to key off, they ran out of course." 

The 1-second margin between second and third marked the only time all year Fleshman beat the previously undefeated Bei.  But Bei is only a sophomore and will undoubtedly be back.  An even younger runner, freshman Felicia Guliford of Gallup NM, finished fourth, only 5 seconds slower than Bei and the last girl under 18 minutes.

Girls team scores:  West 25, NE 45, MW 55, South 117.

BOYS: The boys race saw Ian Dobson lead for a mile before Jorge Torres of Illinois make his move.   Torres was followed closely by Louie Lucchini of Maine and New Englander Andy Powell before pulling away for a 7-second win.   Lucchini hung on for second, but Powell faded badly to 12th.  Adam Tenforde of Washington closed for third, four seconds behind Luchini.   

The expected pace setter Powell told Marc Bloom he felt finished after 2 miles. The New Englander did not offer the 4:25 - 4:30 1-mile pace predicted by John Molvar; the lead pack passed the mile mark in 4:52. 

Torres, the only four-time Foot Locker finalist, capped a steady rise with successive finishes of 13th, 5th, 2nd, and 1st. Twin brother Ed Torres, who was 10 minutes behind Jorge at birth, was only 24 seconds behind today and finished 6th, just ahead of Dobson. 

The race mirrored the recruiting battle of college running powers: the Torres brothers are headed for Colorado and Tenforde and Powell will augment the Stanford stable.
