Despite hot and humir weather, sanwiching a meet-stopping
thunderstorm on Friday night, NJ athletes turned in some pretty fair
performances over the weekend, leading into Wednesday's all-group final at
South Plainfield.
Kevin DiGiorgio of Bayonne warmed up with a 180-4 discus win on
Friday night, then exactl;y matched his Gr. IV SP record the next day at
68-7 1/4. Despite the adverse weather for distance runners, Murad Campbell
of Overbrook "strolled" to a 919.16 3200 win on Friday and took the 1600
the next day in 415.69. But he did not run the 800 where an almost certain
win would have given his team a part of a triple tie for the title.
The Gr. IV sprints were also hot. On FRiday, Hakim Johnson of
Elizabeth used a 2.3 following wind to win a close one from footballed Ali
Lee of Woodbridge in 21.76. Rob gary of Lenape just beat the storm with a
47.30 win over Johnson in the 400. The next day, it was Gary who got the
double, taking the 200 in 21.40 (a hand-timer had 20.8?), with Anthony
Davis of Plainfield (a soph) taking 2nd from Johnson.
In Saturday's Parochial A meet, Todd Matthews of Notre Dame became
only the 2nd boy in NJ history to win four events in a group meet--the
first in one day--and won the HH in 13.60.
We will now look at the team races and each individual event in
turn with the top performances in each by group. (The girls results will
come later).
                                TEAMS
Millville's jumping crew matched Elizabeth at 40 points for the Gr.
IV title., Rob Jordan (6-10/23-5 1/4) and Raffael Craig (6-8/14.58) scored
3 between them. Elizabeth lost a chance to win outright then its relay team
dropped the stick.
It was also a tie in Gr. III betwen Camden and Scotch Plains at 52
points. SP also depended on jumpers/hurdlers with Karl Jennings and Blair
Woodard  totaling 40 points. Junior Danyne Brown doubled the hurdles for
Camden in 13.92 and 53.35.
Manchester Twp ran away with gr. II to complete a perfect season,
indoors and out. Ian Hahn doubled the 1600 and 3200 in 417.45MR and
936.84 and was 3rd in the 800. Kevin Hester doubled the HJ and LJ at 6-8
and 23-1 1/4.
Paulsboro won a 3-way So Jersey race in gr. I with Jon Kalnas
doubling the SP and DT at 63-8 1/2 and 161-10 and Owens Haynes getting 12
points behind him. Louis Smith scored 28 points for 3rd-place Burlington
twp in the 100, 200 and LJ, but failed to score in the 400.
Matthews' heroics weren't enough to stop St. Joseph's, Metuchen,
from completing a perfect outdoor season in Parochial A with a 104-88 win
over Notre Dame. Ed Potter won the 400 in 48.80, finished 2nd to Todd in
the 200 and LJ and 3rd to him in the 100.
Immaculate Conception of Montclair (Rich Kenah's school) had a
triple from junior Karif Hyder in the sprints and got 18 points from jamal
Nisbett in the 800 and 1600 to defeat Pingry in Parochial B.
                        100M
The Gr. IV race was the only wind-aided event among eight boys and
girls finals on Friday. It also proruced the probable 1-2-3 AG finishers in
Johson, Lee and Kishwayne Virgo of Plainfield. Matthews had a 10.89 on
Saturday, without wind, but is unlikely to run the event Wednesday because
of its juxtaposition with the hurdles/

The Gr. IV runners will get a little competition from Gr. III
winner Charlz Hester of Toms River South (21.52) and Matthews (22.08 with a
slightly aching Achilles). This race is run as a final on time--no heats.

While Gary had to run his 47.3- to held off Johnson, Hester slower
down noticeably in the last 15 yards and still won handily in Gr. III in
48.70. Hyder ran 48.69 in Par B and Potter 48.80 in Par A, both without
opposition. In a surprise move---his team had no chance to catcher
Manchester--POleasantville's Joe Lewis added the 400 to his repertoire andf
won Gr. II in 49.17, a couple of hours after taking the IH in 53.29.

                        800
Campbell's absence means nothing for the AG race since he certainly
wouldn't have run it there. Lewis, the indoor champion, was much the
fastest winner in 153.86 ahead of Ricky Gibson of Ridge, whoi surprisingly
picked this race over the 1600. Nisbett was next as he got a "rabbit" pace
from Justin manly of Pingry and won in 155.02.The surprise was the upset
of Ryan Smith of Morristown by Nate Sisco of Morristown in a tactical Gr.
III race--both were also running the 1600 not too lkong after.
        IV 1-France 156.93. 2-Jeff Storch, Cherokee 157.56. 3-Aaron

                        3200
Campbell never looked better than he did striding through his Gr.
IV race in the heat. Nate Miller of Highland, who tied to stay with hi,
faded to a distant 3rd. But right after this 919.16 race, Steve Slattery
of Mt. Olive took the track in Gr. III with a statement to make after
losing his sectional race to Tim Styyler of Cranford a week earlier. he
made it with plenty to spare in a 915.78 win. Next best to these was Todd
Henderson of Notre Dame on Saturday with a 923.14 in Parochial A

Matthews simply flew away from the Parochial Acfield, then came
back a few minutes later with his 100M win. Nanyne Brown, who could be part
of a national record SHR team next spring, was the only other winner under
14.00, but Gr. I produced a MR of 14.26 from Aaron Biddle of Bordentown.
(In this meet, each group had its own set of records and they are rferred
to as meet records even with the obviously duplication, or should we
sexplication).

Danyne Brown was the fastest here by .24 overt Lewis, setting up a
close race on Wednesday along with Chris brunt of CBA who ran away with
Parochial A in 45.53. A sub-53.0 race is likely.
IV 1-Marqueth Tard, Trenton 54.90. 2-Maurice McClain, Elizabeth

                                hj
Junior Robert Jordan of Millville, the Penn winner at 7-2 1/4,
settled for 6-10 here, a height matched by Woodward in gr. II and
approached by Craig, Hester and dave DeSarno of CBA, the Parochial A
winner, all of whom topped 6-8. Jordan took a swipe at 7-1/4, which would
have been a Gr. IV reciord and wiped out the mark of the recently-deceased
Eric Taylor-Perry of Montclair.
        IV 1-Jordan 6-10. 2-Craig 6-8. 3-Terrence Howard, Rancoas Valley
6-6. III-1-Woodard 6-10. 2-Frank Kurilla, Toms River South 6-6. 3-Joe

Chris Gates of New Providence topped 15-0 for the first time in the
FRiday session and none one could matchj it, though Ed Keefe of St. John
Vianney came clkose on Saturday in Parochial A at 14-9.

Christian 11-0.
                        LJ
Jodan and Hester were the only jumpers over 23-0 as the weather
took a real toll on the top athletes, all of whom were competing in several
events. With more concentration n Wednesday, there would be an approach to
24-0. The big loss in the event was Eric McCoo of Red Bank, who was
obviously resting a slight injury for an upcoming all-star football game
with New York.
        IV 1-Jordan 23-5 1/4. 2-Tyrone Johnson, Paterson kennedy 22-6.
III-1-Woodward 22-4 1/2. 2-Jason Taitt, Sparta 22-0. II-1-Hester 23-1 1/4.

It will again be DiGiiorgio and Kalnas against the field. Both were
in top form on Saturday, though a little below their PRs. Keith Rzewuski of
St. Joseph,s Metuchen, the state's other 60-footer, is in a bit of a slump,
but should pick up when he faces the other two head-on.

Terrence Glover of Hamilton answered DoGiorgio's blast with a 187-1
in gr. III, an event which started Friday night and ended Saturday monring
due to the storm. Howard Clark of Pennsauken, at 176-6, was the only other
one over 170-0.

Plainfield seems suck on the 317.0 with at least its 5th race at
or near that figure this year in its Gr. IV win. Trenton was the only othet
team under 320 at the end of two long hot days and did it without its
putative 46.0 runner, Jahmeer Reynolds, who disappeared into the mists
after two early season surfacings.A numbr of teams will strengthen their
lineups with athletes who stuck to individual events this weekend.
