Netters:
Kevin DiGiorgio of Bayonne featured the New Jersey all-group indoor
championships at Jadwin Gym, Princeton, Feb. 22 with a state record of 67-3
in the SP.
In addition to that he also took the national lead for the outdoor
campaign as he used his metal implement for a 66-11 3/4 inch toss in the
trial round. (Since the "Chateau D'If" at Jadwin has a dirt floor, athletes
are allowed to use either an indoor or outdoor implement. Kevin switched to
the rubber-covered indoor shot at the suggestion of his father, Lou, who
also serves as his coach---the senior DiGiorgio was a 57-foot thrower in
the late 60's.
The Madison Avenue rockets from Montclair, Aleah Williams and twins
Meslia and Mikele Barber, also put on quite a show. Running without spikes,
Williams and Melisa Barber had a virtual dead heat in the girls' 55M at
6.97, a close examination of the photo giving Aleah the call. Mikele broke
a 14-year-old meet record held by Denise Mitchell in the 400 as she ran
away from the field for a repeat victory in 55.45. The three girls later
ran on a record 3:55.24 1600R team.
The major upset of the meet came in the girls' 800. Dara Crocker
of Columbia, the 1997 winner, moved up to (and won) the 1600M (in 5:07.77).
Teammate Natalie Deffenbaugh became the 800 favorite, but lost a close (and
hard) battle to Mia Campo of St. Mary's, Jersey City, who ran 2:14.79.
Todd Matthews of Notre Dame, the 1997 National pentathlon champ,
ran away with the boys' 55H in 7.43 and finished 4th in the 55M a few
minutes later in 6.63. He also competed in the HJ, clearing 6-2, obviously
using the meet as a tuneup for the defense of his National crown.
There were some unexpected choices of events in the boys' meet.
Ryan Smith of Morristown, a favorite in the 800M moved up to the 1600,
while Ian Hahn of Manchester Twp, who had upset Steve Slattery of Mt. Olive
in the Gr. II 3200 two weeks earlier, also choce to run the 1600. But
neither placed as high as second as a late charge by Nate Sisco of North
Hunterdon carried him past pacesetter Ricky Gibson of Ridge for a 4:20.15
win.
The 800, which was also missing season leader Jahmeer Reynolds of
Trenton, proved to be a hot race anyway with Joe Lewis of Pleasantville
outkicking Andrew Giannotti of Westwood in 1:56.13. Slattery had no trouble
taking the 3200 in 9:18.58, best in the state this winter.
Another looked-for confrontation did not come off in the boys; 400,
but for a different reason. Season leader Cliff Christian of Newark Science
scratched after suffering a leg injury during the week. Rob Gary of Lenape,
who is actually a Philadelphia resident (his dad teaches at Lenape), was an
easy winner in 49.53 and later ran a 49.2 anchor as Lenape won the 1600R in
3:24.53.
Most of the top finishers now move on to the Eastern championships
tomorrow night (Tuesday) at NY's 168th St. Armory.
