Alabama Indoor ChampionshipsCorrections to Results - Mike MoranDate: Mon, 9 Feb 1998 23:07:32 -0500 (EST) From: Mike Moran <[email protected]> Subject: t-and-f: CORRECTIONS to Alabama HS indoor state championships This post was pretty much right but there were a few mistakes (not the fault of Mr. Fowler). I was there, so I will add a little commentary as well. There were numerous state records set at the meet, perhaps as many as 15-20 records. Primarily because of a reconfiguration of the track in 1994 to meters enstead of yards. The track used to be 180 yards, and was lengthened to 200 meters in '94. It is a banked wooden 200 meter track (and the wood isn't in the best of shape either) Both the Freshman boys, and the Varsity Men broke the team record for most points as well. The times in the 1600 somehow ALL GOT LISTED 4 SECONDS THAN THEY ACTUALLY WERE!!! There was an anouncement made and a 2nd results page went out at the meet with the corrected times, but Mr. Fowler must have missed that. Also, Brothers had the furthest throws in the Freshman Shot Put and Varsity 6A shot put Paul Meadows won the Freshman, and David Meadows had the LONGEST THROW in the 6A of 50 feet 11 inches and was origionally the champion, then Central-Tuscaloosa protested that on one of his throws, his shot had a piece of tape on it and they tried to get David DQ'ed, they were only successful in getting that throw omitted, but he did have an earlier throw with a clean shot that was only good enough for 2nd. Interestinly enough, there was another brother (Brennon Meadows) who was a state champion in 1993 (although it might have only been in the discus outdoors) The favorite in both the 800 and 1600, Jeff Moran, was upset not by the expected 2nd place finisher, but by his own teammate Beau Garrett who did not have a pr any faster than 2:01 going into the meet, PR'ing by about 4 or 5 seconds to take the win 1:56.76-1:56.84 Jeff also ran the open 400 the following day for the 1st time since 8th grade to tie for 3rd, followed immediatly by the 1600 where he was upset by the 3200 meter champion (apparently running the 1600 about 45 minutes after the 400 was too much to ask for) But Hoover was in the hunt for the Team championship so he had to make such sacrifices. Phillip Whiles of Huntsville looked very strong in both the 3200 on Friday night and the 1600 on sunday (4:24.77) Also, the winner of the 55 hurdles, Chris Butler, broke the state record and was the favorite to win the 55 meter dash but false started. The women were dominated by Pelham, coached by John Parks. Hoover is coached by Mary Birdwell. Does anybody find it ironic that the womens championship team is coached by a man, & the mens championship team is coached by a woman? Question: How many other major Mens teams out there, at any level, have a woman for a head coach?
