As promisd, here are the results of the National Girls HS meet June

19-20 at Raleigh, NC.

The Barber twins pretty much stole the show as they swept the

sprints from 100 through 400 meters. But it was still a case of "what might

have been" was the Montclair program the tight family affair that

characterizes nearby Columbia HS, which closed out another successul season

with a repeat victory in the 3200R. With no disrespect to national champ

Westbury, Texas, it would noit have been even close had Montclair put on

the track the same team that won at Penn this year.

100M: Keyon Soley of Uniondale (NY) had won this race last year in

a record 11.40. She is obviously not the same person this year and finished

almost a meter behind Melissa Barber, who ran 11.74 in the finals,

following an 11.71 trial. The wind was calm both days.

        1-Melisa Barbeer 11.74. 2-Soley 11.81. 3-*Latrice Bordetrs, Long

Beach, Cal 11.91. 4-*Monique Tubbs, Matterpan, Mass 11.99. 5-Alison Culley,

Foxboro, Mass 12.06. 6-TaMarra Nixon, Washington, Pa 12.22.

200M: Barber's dominance was even more marked here as she ran 23.93

in the trials and 23.94 in the finals, a full .2 ahead of anyone else

either day.

        1-Melisa Barber 23.94. 2-Rhondale Jones, Wilmington, del 24.18.

3-Demetria Washington, Fayetteville, NC 24.23. 4-Borders 24.31. 5-Culley

24.47. 6-Sashanie Simpson, Brooklyn 25.01.

400M: Mikele Barber has been chasing the NJ state record for two

years now and finally got it here with a perfectly-paced race which brought

her home in 52.56, 10 yards ahead of Demetria Washington of Fayetteville,

NC. In 6th place was Katrina Sye of Buena, NJ whose 55.00 indicated what

she may do next year when healthier legs will allow her to run the 400H.

        1-Mikele Barber 52.56. 2-Washington 53.86. 3-*Joni Smith, Long

Beach, Cal 54.37. 4-Saraque Whittaker, Ft. Lauderdale, Fla 54.59. 5-Simpson

5.74. 6-*Sye 55.00.

800M: The six placers were evenly divided between the first two

sections here. The seeded heat went first and passed the 400 mark around 65

seconds, Lindsay Hyatt of Auburn, Cal., taking off after that for a 15-yard

win in 2:09.10. In the second section, Natalie Deffenbaugh of Columbia,

whose appeal for transfer to the first section was turned down, steamed to

a 61-62-second first lap and Jen Vendetti of Franklin, Mass, used that

start to win in 2:09.45. Deffenbaugh was the only senior among the top six.

        1-*Hyatt 2:09.10. 2-*Vendetti 2:09.45. 3-*Kameisha Bennett, Dayton,

Ohio 2:11.30. 4-Deffenbaugh 2:11.41. 5-*Kristina Bratton, Palmetto, Fla

2:11.44. 6-*Cicely Campbell, Warrensville, Ohio 2:11.72.

Mile: As with the boys' race, this one did not have the star cast

of 1997, but produced a competitive race until Bethany Brewster of

Freeland, Mich., too over on the final lap to win by 20 yards in 4:50.43.

        1-Brewster 4:50.43. 2-*Heather Cappello, Lockport, NY 4:53.62.

3-*Amy Nickerson, Coquille, Ore 4:.53.78. 4-Erin Sims, Pascagoula, Miss

4:54.08. 5-Laura Turner, Portsmouth, RI 4:55.06. 6-*Katie Hotchkiss,

Fremont, Cal 4:57.18.

2M: The field went through the first mile around 5:17, very closely

packed. Three girls then separated themselves from the pack, Footlocker CC

champ Erin Sullivan of Jericho, Vt., Laura Turner of Portsmouth, RI and

Jillian Mastroianni of Sayville, NY. It was a chariot race on the final lap

with Sullivan winning out in 10:29.64. One of the nation's top frosh,

Michelle dela Vina of Valparaiso, Ind., was 5th in 10:37.97, the other,

Erin Donohue of Haddonfield, NJ, was busy with her first love (at this

point, at least), basketball.

        1-*Sullivan 10:29.64. 2-Turner 10:30.42. 3-**Mastroianni 10:31.27.

4-*Liz Reusser, Middleton, Wisc 10:37.10. 5-***Michelle Dela Vina,

Valparaiso, Ind 10:37.97. 6-Sharon VanTuyl, Portage, Mich 10:41.4.2.

100H: Like the boys; race, this one was decided in the rush to the

first hurdle with Sherianne Lawson of West Palm Beach, Fla., getting the

jump on the field. Lakeema Lewis of Plainfield, NJ, and Jerkita McClorin of

West Palm Beach, came on at the end, but fell a couple of feet short. Frosh

LaTasha Pharr of North Rowen, NC was an impressive 5th in 13.96.

        1-Lawson 13.71. 2-Lewis 13.78. 3-*McClorin 13.78. 4-*8Dalanda

Jackson, Shaker Hts, Ohio 13..93. 5-***Pharr 13.96. 6-Natasha Neal, Union

City, Cal 14.11.

400H: Chava DeMart of Houston, Texas, barely held off versatile

Jamilla Wade of Simon Gratz, Philadelphia, for the win in 59.06. Tia Tabb

of Newport News grabbed 3rd place from the 2nd section. Defender Char

Foster of Florida was missing, an absence still unexplained.

        1-DeMart 59.06. 2-Wade 59.14. 3-Tabb 1:00.55. 4-Thelma Nagler,

Columbia, Md 1:00.81. 5-Danielle Hobson, West orange, NJ 1:01.90. 6-Medea

Ashton, Washington Twp, NJ 1:02.01.

HJ: The four girls left at the winning height of 5-8 3/4 here

ranged from Christina Estrict of Cleveland, Ohio, about 5-4, to Jen

Barcellona of Msgr. Donovan, Toms River, NJ, who stands 6-2. But it was

Estrict who was the only one to clear the bar.

        1-Estrict 5-8.75. 2-Paulina Hsieh, Bellevue, Wash 5-7. 3-Cheryl

Burdick, Ramsey, NJ &Barcellona 5-7. 5-5-way tie at 5-5.

PV: This had an enthusiastic gallery as some 25 girls battled to

succeed Melissa Feinstein as champion. It got down to Deanna Shuler of

Jupiter, Fla., and Shannon Agee of Helena, Mt., both of whom finally

cleared 12-7 1/2, Shuler winning on fewer misses. Grade school vaulter

Samantha Shepard of Weston, Mass., was 3rd.

        1-*Shuler 12-7.5. 2-Agee 12-7.5. 3-****Shepard 11-7.75. 4-**Julie

Penner, Helena, Mt 11-1.75. 5-Michelle Kercado, Woodbury, NY 11-1.75.

6-Erin Nett, Bel Air, Md 11-1.75.

LJ: This event lost a lot of its luster when Soley elected not to

compete. Kimberly Jones of Greensboro, NC, was the best of the rest at

19-11 1/2.

1-*Jones 19-11.5. 2-*Antoinette Wilks, Palm Beach lakes, Fla

19-4.75. 3-*Eunice Lane, Sumter, SC 19-4.25. 4-Tara Conley, Solon, Ohio

18-6.5. 5-Abby Rubino, Southwick, Mass 18-5.75. 6-**Kitoya Carter, Miami

18-5.75.

TJ: The final duel between indoor champ (and Golden West winner)

Carlene Cummings of Englewood, NJ and Jodi Schlesinger of Bardonia, NY,

was thwarted when graduation exercises kept Cumings at home. Schlsinger had

no trouble taking the event at 41-3 3/4.

        1-*Schlesinger 41-3.75. 2-Theresa Williams, Dorchester, Mass

39-10.75. 3-*Wilks 39-10.5. 4-Jameka Collins, Virginia Beach 39-3.25.

5-Taressa Davis, Durham, NC 38-7.75. 6-*Trell Frye, Columbia, SC 38-6.25.

SP: This was another event where the obvious favorite, Heather

Colyer of Pennsylvania, was among the missing. This left Chaniqua Ross of

Elk Grove, Cal., in command of the field and she won by more than three

feet at 48-10 3/4.

        1-Ross 48-10.75. 2-Krista Keir, Westerville, Ohio 45-7.25.

3-*Rebekah Green, Blacklick, Ohio 43-10.5. 4-Naomi Elliott, Marietta, Ga.

43-10. 5-Alana Robinson, Grosse Ile, Mich. 43-4.5. 6-Mandy Borschowa, North

bend, Wash 43-4.25.

DT: In an unusual bit of consistency between the two events, five

of the top six shot-putters came back to place among the top six here,

though in quite different order. Mandy Borschowa of North Bend, Wash., went

from sixth to first, for example, with a 172-7 toos, the first four topping

160-0.

        1-Borschowa 172-7. 2-Ross 167-5. 3-Keir 164-2. 4-Robinson 163-5.

5-*Green 141-6. 6-LaShana Poole, Anderson, SC 136-9.

HT: In an unusual double, Maureen Griffin of Pocatello, Idaho,

competed in the USATF meet in new Orleans on Friday, then flew to Raleigh

to win this event handily at 187-10. The other places, as usual, were

dominated by Rhode Island youngsters.

        1-Griffin 187-10. 2-Waduda Nural-Islam, Providence 165-11.

3-Melissa Houston, Warwick, RI 150-6. 4-**Maria Garcia, Providence 143-4.

5-***Katherine Johnson, Warwick 141-3. 6-Naomi Elliott, Marietta, Ga 134-6.

JT: Lynlee Phillips of Shawnee HS, NJ, has had a perfect season in

the event and it didn't end here. She took the lead from the start and

improved to 140-6 in th first round of the finals. Sounds easy, but this

was the first time all season she had a normal javelin in her hand---NJ

throwers being forced to use a rubber-tip implement during the season and

schools forbidden to even own a metal-tipped spear. (This, in a state which

still holds the national HS girls mark and has produced three men who once

held the WR)

        1-*Phillips 140-6. 2-Kayla Russum, Lake Stevens, Wash 134-2.

3-**Lindsey Regan, Foxboro, Mass 132-3. 4-Jennifer Lohn, Media, Pa 131-5.

5-Brandy Fischer, Mandeville, La 129-8. 6-*Jill Pedretti, Verona, Wisc

128-5.

400R: As already noted, Westbury, Texas, had a clear road here,

running 46.24 in th trials and 46.11 in the finals.

        1-Westbury 46.11. 2-Bethel, Va 46.62. 3-Palm Beach Lakes 46.90.

4-Simon Gratz, Pa 47.36. 5-Uniondale, NY 47.65. 6-Collinwood, Ohio 47.7.5.

1600R: A very close race with the lead changing hands so many times

that even the announcers got confused. But it was Simon Gratz which came

oiut of the dark to win clearly in 3:44.08.

        1-Simon Gratz 3:44.08. 2-Menchville, Va 3:44.77. 3-Palm Beach lakes

3:44.92. 4-Bayside, Va 3:45.82. 5-Westbury 3:46.50. 6-Bethel, Va 3:47.91.

3200R: Catherine Casey of Columbia had had a series of poor races,

including the 3200 here, when she stepped on the track to handle the 2nd

leg. Her coach wanted sub-2:25, she gave him a 2:21+ and it was easy after

that with Natalie deffenbaugh and Dara Crocker from the 997 national record

team taking over. Of course, Crocker, had to let Manchester central, NH go

by just to feel at home, but kicked off the last turn to win in 9:09.85.

        1-Columbia, NJ 9:09.85. 2-Manchester Central 9:10.49. 3-Wachusett

Regional, Mass. 9:11.76. 4-New Canaan, Ct 9:16.00. 5-The Bromfield Scjool,

Mass 9:22.70. 6-Pine Bush, NY 9:31.88.

SMR: A much higher caliber race than the boys' event with

Collinwood, Ohio, topping two Virginia schools, Bayside and Menchville, in

3:57.01. Columbia was a late entry, so ran another section and won in

4:02.69. (I think they ran this just to keep their NJ franchise in the

event; this is the 4th fastest NJ time ever and, had a regular sprinter

been available for the 2nd leg and had the team been in the seeded section,

it would have been well under 4:00).

        1-Collinwood 3:57.01. 2-Bayside 3:58.67. 3-Menchville 4:00.43.

4-Columbia 4:02.69. 5-Bethel, Va 4:08.48. 6-Trenton, NJ 4:10.02.

3K Walk: An almost all-NY race, it was won by Brenda Genoino of

Farmington, NY.

        1-Genoino 16:06.85. 2-Alison Petretti, Bayport, NY 16:13.52.

3-*:Lorraine Horgan, Holbrook, NY 16:21.8. 4-Christine Hyland, Oakdale, NY

16:32.44. 5-**Anne Dumas, Huntington, NY 17;08.17. 6-*Lindsay Bellias,

Southampton, NY 17:15.62.

                                                        Ed Grant
