Highlights - Day 1

Fort Worth O.D.Wyatt Boys run 39.80 in 4x100 prelims! -
great anchor legs in the 4x800 relays send the crowd home happy

Day 1 details

The most astonishing performance of Day 1 was not even in a final.  National record holding Ft. Worth O.D. Wyatt, the only HS boys relay team ever to break 40 seconds, did it for the fourth time this year.  Their 39.80 was the second fastest for the event in history.  National 100 meter leader Demario Wesley was all alone as he raced down the straightaway in the anchor leg.
Anchors who refused to lose thrilled the crowd in 4x800 relays that ended Day 1 near midnight.  First, Dara Crocker did it with a 2:11 anchor leg for the perennial distance relay champs Columbia HS of New Jersey, whose time of 9:09.85 was less than a second better than Central HS of New Hampshire.  Then, Shawn Jeffers led Boys and Girls High of New York to a 7:41.34 victory in the same fashion.  Both anchors fought off numerous challenges.  Boys and Girls added the outdoor title to go with their National Scholastic Indoor and Penn Relays victories.  Three teams finished within 1.14 seconds of the winner: Fort Wayne IN Northrop, Stillwater MN, and Dublin-Coffman OH.
Another great anchor leg highlighted the girls sprint medley.  Kimberly Jordan (Cleveland OH Collinwood) came from behind on the far turn of the 800 meter leg to give her team a 1.66 second win over Virginia Beach VA Bayside, with Menchville VA and Columbia NJ close behind.
Jodi Schlesinger (Bardonia NY jr) dominated the girls triple jump.   She grabbed the lead with her first jump (41-3.75) and never lost it.  She added three more jumps over 40 feet, but didn't need them as no one else could reach the 40 foot mark.   Greg Yeldell (East Spencer NC sr) won the boys triple jump with a leap of 51-3.75 to repeat his Golden West victory a week earlier, albeit 2 feet shorter; Tuan Wreh (Rockville MD Richard Montgomery HS sr) was second at 49-00.25.
Jim Autenreith (Houston TX sr), the nation's leading pole vaulter, was impressive just by showing up.  Last Saturday, he fell into the box at the Golden West attempting 17-6 and left the meet in an ambulance.  Despite a bruised kidney that still bothers him, Autenreith made 15-1 on his third attempt tonight to qualify for the finals Saturday.
Erin Sullivan (Jericho VT jr), who showed she was back in form by taking the national 1500 and 3000 lead in the Vermont state meet, sprinted away from the pack to win the girls 2-mile in 10:29.64.  Erin turned the last lap in 69 seconds to win convincingly over Laura Turner (Portsmouth RI sr), Jillian Mastroianni (Sayville NY soph), Liz Reusser (Middleton WI jr), and Golden West winner Michelle dela Vina (Valparaiso IN fr).
Murad Campbell (Lindenwold NJ jr) trounced the boys 2-mile field in 9:02.78.
Terrence Glover (Trenton NJ jr) sent national boys discus leader Reedus Thurmond (Gardena CA sr) to his second straight post-season defeat.   Glover's 196-10 was 3 feet better than Thurmond, who went into last week's Golden West with the only throw in the country better than 200 feet this year (209').
