6/3/98 at South Plainfield NJ
NJ All Group - the Ed Grant Report
Netters:
I will be sending top six results on all events from last night's New Jersey HS AG meet
later in the day. But here are a few highlights:
To begin with, it was a very windy evening and all straightaway races were wind-aided.
Also, all longer races were therefore somewhat wind-impeded. This made the 3200 times of
Erin Donohue and Murad Campbell most impressive (Campbell would likely have broken 9:00 on
a calm evening and he ran with plenty in reserve.)
Girls
Sprints: The Barber twins swept all three events. They light frames probably profited a
little more than usual from the aiding brezes. Melissa won the 100 in 11.57, Mikele took
the 200 in 24.00 and the 400 in 54.61 after running much too fast in the first 200 against
the wind. Katrina Sye of Buena was most impressive with a 55.03 in that race--she weghs in
at about 100 pounds--and I can only imagine what she might have run in the 400H this
spring but for a leg injury which may require surgery this summer
800: A big upset with unheralded Lauren mcHale (Lafayette-bound) of Ocean City giving
retiring coach Mike Naples a goodbye present with a 2:12.77 victory over Columbia's Dara
Crocker (who finished 3rd after setting the pace against the wind in the second lap
backstretch.
1600-A solid win for Howell's Lindsey Gallo, another lightweight in 5:04.38 with Kris
Haughey of North Hunterdon a close 2nd--this girl always seems to reack her pak at the
right time.
3200-An impressive showing by Haddonfield frosh Donohue who, after a 5:18 first 1600, made
a big move to open a 50-yard gap on Cate Guiney.
She held on well to win in 10:43.71.
100H: With a 4.5 wind behind her, Sherese Price of Pleasantville took lakeema Lewis of
Plainfield by two yards in 13.85 after scratching from the 100M final
400H: Natalie Deffenbaugh won her first AG title in a tertiary event here, going 1:02.33
in the height of the wind at the opening of the meet. She did not run either of her usual
races, te 800 and 1600, but look for her to do very well at the Junior Nationals. The
season has really only just begun for the Columbia stars.
HJ: Jumping against the wind, Cheryl Burdick of ramsey settled for a 5-8 win=---she had
the bar immediately placed at an outdoor SR of 5-11 1/4.
LJ: Two girls who didn't have their best event in the meet went 1-2. TJer Carlene Cummings
of Englewood won at 18-5, all-arounder Bridgette Ingram of Columbia was 2nd.
SP: Sara Beth Cullen of Red Bank took her third straight AG title at 43-6 1/4.
DT: Second in the SP, melinda Boykin of Bridgeton won this one by a foot from Liz Scherer
of Middletown North at 134-10.
JT: Lynlee Phillips of Shawnee became the first NJan to crack the 140-0 marrk this spring
at 142-0.
1600R: A little slower than expected as Willingboro ran with one sub ion the wind and
still won easuily at 3:53.46 from Washington twp.
Eight teams beat 4:00, with better conditions, it probably would have been at least a
dozen.
Boys
100: Tim Athill of Pleasantville became the first NJ freshman to win a boy's AG title at a
windy (3.4) 10.68. The race was missing Gr. IV champ Hakim Johnson of Elizabeth, who chose
the 400, and soph Anthony Davis of Plainfield, who had false-started out of the
sectionals.
200: Davis won here at 21.53 as Rob Gary of Lenape settled for the 400. Ali lee of
Woodbridge, who false-started out of the 100 trials, was 2nd at 21.83.
400: Gary had a surprisingly easy win over Charlz Hester of Toms River South and Johnson
in 47.85.
800: Justin manlky of Pingry set the plate with a 52 first lap and Joe Lewis of
Pleasantville went on to complete an undefeated indoor and outdoor season in the state at
1:53.62.
1600: Ian Hahn of Manchester twp outkicked Nate Sisco of North Hunterdon and Ryan Smith of
Morristown (2nd in the 800) in 4:17.84.
3200: Murad Campbell made a big move on the 5th lap and easily defeated State Slattery of
Mt. Olive in 9:07.10.
HH: A 2.9 breeze blew Todd Matthews of Notre Dame to what would have been a state AT
record of 13.52.
IH: A great finish with the state's four best even over the last hurdle. Marqueth Tard of
Trenton barely outleaned Chris Brunt of CBA in 53.25.
HJ--Again bucking a stiff wind, Robert Jordan of Millville topped the bat at 7-0
PV: In tricky wind donditions (a quartering breeze), Chris Gates of New Providence had his
2nd 15-0 clearance in a week's time and won over three others who cleared 14-6.
LJ: Jordan got his 2nd win of the meet here at 22-10.
SP: Kevin DiGiorgio of Bayonne fell a foot short of the previous week's mark but won
easily at 67-8 3/4.
DT": Terrence Glover of Hamilton had a vavorable wind, but still got it out only
185-11, well short of his hoped-for 200+
JT: Nick Serpico gave Verona its first AG win (as had Gates for nP) with a 198-6 toss with
the infamous rubber-tipped Javelin '
1600R: Plainfield had no trouble winning here in 3:18.37 to complete a perfect season in
the state.
