Now I know that the Big Sky State is not generally known as the hotbed of prep track, but
there were some notable performances at the 1998 State Meets.
The meets were held May 29 and 30.
Class AA and A were held in Butte (alt.
= approx.5,200', 1600meters).
The Class B and C were in Missoula (alt. = approx. 3,200', 1,000 meters).
Average H.S. enrollments for the various classes: AA = 1,000, A = 550, B = 250, C = 50.
The meet highlights were the women's pole vault. Shannon Agee, AA, Helena High, 13'0"
(pr = 13'2"); Julie Penner, AA, Helena High, Suzanne Krings, AA, Helena Capital,
Leila Ben-Youseff, A, Sidney, and Kari Wilson, C, Shields Valley all at 11'0".
Another exciting performance came in the boys Class B 1600. Scott McGowan of Poplar edged
Casey Jermyn of Plains 4:21.91 to 4:21.95. Remember these performances come from schools
which each have about 200 students. Jermyn's other notable accomplishment for the year was
breaking the conference record of Shannon Butler.
In the Class B girls 1600 and 3200 Sabrina Monro of Boulder won both easily in times of
5:03.29 and 10:46.12, the latter a new state record.
