In the Mass HS class meets JR Andy Powell coasted to an easy 9.33 win by
one second over Lynn Tech JR Frank Sanchez. Due to the new schedule he
will only have 3 and a half days to recover for Saturdays all State meet
while some of his competition will have a full 7 days. I have been
complaining to the breeze for years about the lack of a true Mass all
state XC meet for years to no avail, so I will not waste any time
complaining about this latest injustice. Powell will have no trouble
beating the competition but his goal of breaking 9 has been made more
difficult by the new schedule. Powell also led his team to victory in
the 4x800 (8.25).
Mohamed won his mile race in 4.21 over Gloucesters
soph Tristan Colangelo who ran 4.23. Colangelo also anchored his team
to victory in the 4x800 in 8.20. Colangelo has a dangerous kick so I am
sure Mohamed wont let him get close at Saturdays all state meet. The
4x800 could be interesting because Colangelo, who ran 1.57 last year as
a freshman will likely get the baton up by about 5 seconds to Powell,
who ran 1.52 last year as a soph, and several other teams will have a
chance to win. In the 1000 Bill Spierdowis of Foxboro is the class of
the field and he should win easily on Saturday. He also defeated
Mohamed in a 400 last week. Both runners ran 50. Spierdowis wont face
any real competition until the Nationals 800. Powell has already stated
he will run the mile at the Nationals. Hopefully Mohamed will be in the
mile also for a shot at redemption for his loss to Powell at Milrose.
Since he is the defending champ at 800 and the only 2 time Footlocker
champ, he obviously can run the 800, mile or 2 mile and is capable of
winning any of them.
