Carroll Indoor Invitational
Westminster, returning to indoor track after a 15-year absence, won the boys division of the first Carroll Indoor Track and Field Invitational over Middletown 84.5 to 72.5. Central won the girls division, 96 to 76, over the hosts, with Middletown third at 65. The meet was held at Westminster coach Jim Shank's Carroll Indoor Sports Center, which usually teems with soccer games. The cushiony artificial turf surface and tight turns of the 3-lane, 180-meter oval seemed to hold down running performances. In the field events, Bel Air's Erin Nett wasn't bothered by conditions as she soared to 10 feet in the pole vault. Other strong performances were by Randall Winston of Parkdale in the 55 Meter Dash (6.5); Charles Dean of Central, 300 (38.5); Derek Dye of Middletown, HJ (6-4); Reed Saunders of Middletown, PV (12-0); Beau Ridgeway of Westminster, SP (49-5.5); and Trinette Price of Middletown, HJ (5-1). Central's Lakisha Barnaby doubled in the 300 and 55H and Central swept the three relays. Jason Santucci of Westminster, class 4A state champion in cross country, won a close 3200 in 10:13.4, just a second ahead of Shawn Day of Thomas Johnson. Westminster boys also got wins from the 3200 Relay and Erik Lohnes in the 55 Hurdles. Central doubled in the 720 Meter Relay and 1600 Meter Relay.
