"DyeStat Grads"
fuel Colorado sweep

"DyeStat graduates" -- runners who were recently celebrated on DyeStat -- did very well at the NCAA cross country championships, with key roles in the stunning sweep by the University of Colorado. Most striking performance was by Liza Pasciuto, two-time Foot Locker national finalist from Murrieta Valley CA. Liza spurred Colorado's surprise victory by outkicking bunches of runners to finish 13th, #2 on the championship women's team. Four of the five scorers for Colorado's men winners were 4 Brent Vaughn (CO 2003 graduate), 5 Bret Schoolmeester CO 2002, 44 Stephen Pifer IL 2003. 49 James Strang TN 2004.

Two men who duelled more than once last year in high school -- home schooled Josh McDougal and Shadrack Kiptoo of New Mexico -- were side by side again, finishing 13th and 14th. They were 3rd and 4th at last year's Foot Locker finals in San Diego. Former Lawrence North IN star, Nef Araia, who was fourth in the 2002 Foot Locker finals, was Stanford's first finishers at 8th.

Liza Pasciuto's amazing finish

a note from John Ortega

Track writer John Ortega, formerly with the Los Angeles Times, sent this email about Liza Pasciuto's performance to DyeStatCal:

Hola amigos.
How are you? I hope well.
I know you're aware of Liza Pasciuto's monster race at the NCAA championships, but I thought you might be interested in a few more details in regards to her performance.
I was unable to pick her out of the large pack at the 2-kilometer mark of the 6k race. But she was in about 50th place, just ahead of Anita Siraki of Stanford, when she came through 4k and had moved up to 25th with 800 meters left.
From there, she just kept reeling in several big-name runners in front of her.
She told me afterward that she knew she was running well in the final 2 kilometers of the race, but had no idea how high she was until she heard someone say she was in 20-something place in the last kilometer.
Colorado Coach Mark Wetmore said Pasciuto's performance was the biggest key to the Buffaloes' runaway victory. He said he would have been happy with a 60th-place finish from her so he was ecstatic with her performance. He also admitted that he had no idea where she was during the race as he didn't see her during the first 500 meters and figured she was struggling because she had battled meniscus problems during the season.
Needless to say, it was nice to see a kid from California run that well in a meet that was held on a very sloppy course.

When the mudding was over, the earliest waves through the finish chute were peppered with former DyeStatters at the NCAA Division I men's national cross country championship at Indiana State's course.

The pack hit the mile mark at about 4:40, with Josphat Boit of Arkansas and Kurt Benninger of Notre Dame among several sharing the lead.

Colorado coach Mark Wetmore was waiting near the two-mile post, and he commented that his guys should be there at around the 9:40 mark. Boit and Matt Gonzales of New Mexico were two of the frontrunners at two miles, with a large pack on their shoulders.

At the end of the second interior loop, which was beyond the 4k mark, Boit and Gonzales along with Matt Tegenkamp of Wisconsin and Ryan Hall of Stanford were leading a group of several others. It was striking how many runners were ahead of Colorado's #1, Brent Vaughn, at that point, but Wetmore didn't seem worried. Calmly he encouraged Vaughn, "Reel 'em in." Once Vaughn went by, other Buffaloes such as Bret Schoolmeester and Brad Harkrader soon followed -- Wetmore was shouting to a different runner every few seconds.

Boit, Gonzales and Robert Cheseret of Arizona led several others through four miles in 19:38.

At 8k Boit and Simon Bairu of Wisconsin were alone in the lead, with Gonzales a few strides behind. Then came Benson Chesang of Kansas, Cheseret, Matthew Chesang of Kansas State, and Chris Solinsky of Wisconsin.

Bairu beat Boit in the final sprint, and Gonzales caught Boit at the line. Vaughn climbed all the way to fourth, and Schoolmeester nipped Simon Ngata of Georgia for fifth. Benson Chesang placed seventh; Stanford's #1, Nef Araia, took eighth in his freshman season. Other former DyeStaters included Tegenkamp in 11th, Josh McDougal of Liberty in 13th, Shadrack Kiptoo of New Mexico in 14th, Bobby Curtis of Villanova in 15th, and Solinsky in 16th.

Before the athletes emerged from the finish enclosure, word was being excitedly exchanged between Colorado Buffaloes outside and inside the fence that maybe they'd won.

McDougal talked afterward with Vaughn, Schoolmeester and Solinsky. McDougal observed that the mud made accelerating out of turns difficult. Solinsky remarked how hard Vaughn and Schoolmeester were running when they went by.

In the end it was Coach Wetmore on the victory platform with his champion women's and men's teams -- the women wiped out Duke, 63-144, and the men took #1-ranked Wisconsin, 90-94.

Women

by Dave Luce

Though Shalane Flanagan has departed for a professional racing career, the NCAA Division I women's national cross country championship was not without a runaway winner on Monday.

Kim Smith of Providence, who finished second to Flanagan last year, hit the mile mark of Indiana State's course in 5:04 with an eight-second lead over Renee Metevier of Colorado, who in turn had a six-second cushion over the chase pack.

Smith hit 4k in 13:13 with a 15-second margin over Metevier. The chase pack at that point was led by Caroline Bierbaum of Columbia, frosh Lindsay Donaldson of Yale, Laura Turner of BYU, and frosh Danette Doetzel of Michigan State.

In the middle of the final interior "teardrop" loop (roughly 5200m into the race, with about 800m remaining) the order was Smith, Metevier, Bierbaum, Turner, Donaldson, Maureen McCandless of Pittsburgh, and Carol Henry of North Carolina.

With about 200m remaining the order was the same except that McCandless had passed Donaldson. Then, in the final sprint, the top seven held their positions.

Though Colorado ran away with the team title, #5-ranked Duke placed second ahead of #2-ranked Providence, #4-ranked Michigan, and the #1-ranked Stanford team, which was without Sara Bei (last year's third-place finisher behind Flanagan and Smith).
