Mike McGrath is part of a talented group of Oregon distance runners, and he has been overshadowed by better known members of the group. Not any more.

As high school athletes turned to the end of season championships, McGrath led the nation in both the 800 (1:50.09) and the mile (4:10.87).

The 800 was 5 seconds better than his time in the same meet a year ago. Mike credits cross country for building his strength so he can handle harder workouts this year.

McGrath is choosing the mile to run at the Nike Indoor Championships.

Next year, McGrath will stay home to run for the University of Oregon.

Menchville won the powerful Virginia AAA state meet, and they could have done it with one athlete: Yvette Lewis. Thanks to Virginia's generous entry rules (three running events and unlimited field events), Lewis competed in six events and scored in all with 2 firsts, 3 seconds, and 1 fifth. In 8-deep scoring used by the meet, that totals 48 points for Lewis, one more than second place Bethel's team total. Menchville didn't even need the 13 points it got from other girls.

The triple jump was last, and if Lewis was tired, she didn't show it. She improved her US#3 triple jump mark by a quarter inch to 41-4.75.

No one seemed surprised by Lewis' successful marathon performance. After 5 races and 15 jumps, Yvette Lewis said, "I feel good." Her field events coach, Natalie Pierce, said, "She's been doing this all year." Her mother, Lorna Dowlin, said, "She gets upset when she isn't this busy."

Yvette is taking it easy in the Nike Indoor Championships. She will only compete in four events: 60H, LJ, TJ, and shuttle hurdles.

Q&A with Mike McGrath

1. Briefly describe the races that gave you US#1 ranking in the 800 and mile, and your season to date.

My 800 race got out really fast and I was bumped around at the start. I went through 400 meters in 53.5 feeling really good. I eased up for about 150 meters and then had a really strong finish. In the mile I went out to run quick but the race went through in only about 2:07. I found out I had a lot left in me and ended with a good kick.

2. What are your goals for this season? for your career?

My goal is, like all good track athletes, I want to do something really special.

3. You seem to be running faster right now. Are you training any differently this year?

The difference with my training this year is that I can finally handle doing hard workouts. Last year I was unable to do any sort of volume because I had no base, but I have put in a lot of work and finally started running cross country and that is why i am running so well.

4. What is your proudest achievement to date?

Mt. Sac last year was a breakthrough race for me. It showed me that I was going to be able to compete on a high level.

5. What person or thing has had the most impact on your life?

My family has really been great. I have been blessed with a great life with loving parents and sisters.

6. What person (athlete or otherwise) would you most like to meet?

Michael Jordan. He's a good athlete and a winner.

7. How do you prepare yourself mentally for a big race?

I relax and pray. I listen to music occasionally to relax before a race, but not to get excited.

8. What do you like to do when you have spare time from school work and running?

I like hanging out with my family and friends. My friends and I usually get together to watch football or basketball.
