2006 Harrier Super 25
National Cross Country Team Rankings by Marc Bloom
|
Pre-Season
Boys - Girls Hilton NY girls and Mead WA boys
start 2006 season as US#1
by John Dye
Marc Bloom's pre-season rankings are full of new faces as 24 of the 50 teams were unranked in the final 2005 lists. While defending NTN champion Hilton NY girls retain their #1 ranking, the 2005 boys NTN champion Saratoga NY start out this year unranked. Even more startling is the fall of perennial US#1 Saratoga NY girls to 15th as we start the new season.
One girls team unranked at the end of 2005 is in the pre-season top 10 for 2006 -- Tatnall DE (10th). Eleanor Roosevelt MD makes a big move from 12th to 5th after following up their NTN 11th place finish last December with powerful performances on the track indoors and outdoors.
There is a definite west coast slant in the boys rankings, undermining the notion that New Jersey resident Marc Bloom has an Eastern bias. The top three and five of the top 10 teams are from the west coast. Mead Spokane WA moves up to top ranking after two straight high finishes at NTN, followed by Royal Simi Valley CA and Ferris Spokane WA. Perennial parochial powers Jesuit Carmichael CA and Central Catholic Portland OR are 6th and 7th. With two teams in the top 3, Spokane WA is thus challenging Eugene OR's self-proclaimed title of "Track Town USA".
The Super 25 is produced by Marc Bloom, now in his 31st year publishing The Harrier . Prior column shows end of season ranking n 2005.
