Boys Steeple - Greg Kelsey 6:02.13 runs smart

The New York state meet the previous week had set up what appeared to be a great NON steeple race, especially given the stunning 9:02 recorded by Noel Bateman. But Bateman had prior commitments, so the battle for the win fell to Saratoga NY sr Greg Kelsey, the previous US 3K steeple list leader, and 2k list leader Chaminade NY jr Ryan McDermott.
With Marie Lawrence having just set a US record for the girls, the boys had a tough act to follow in the sweltering heat. Kelsey led most of the race and pulled away from McDermott for a 6:02.13 to 6:05.50 victory.
Kelsey shared after the race, “I was really happy to win Nationals. Words can’t express how great it feels.”
Greg Kelsey pulled away from Ryan McDermott and Taylor
Morgan on the final lap and thundered down the homestretch for a win in 6:02.13.
Kelsey (Saratoga, NY), a Maryland signee, came in as the nation's #2 in the
3000 meter steeplechase (9:16.25). His winning time Saturday in 6:02.13 ranks
second on the current prep list behind the 5:54.4 by McDermott (Mineola, NY).
“I wanted to stay smart and not go out too fast,” said Kelsey. “Last year at
this meet, I got out way too quick and died at the end. This year I just sat
behind whoever jumped out in the lead, and then at the middle race I put in a
surge and tried to keep it as long as I could.”
Second was McDermott in 6:05.50, followed by Morgan (Portland, OR), third with a
time of 6:06.29.
“Words can’t express how I feel right now,” said an ebullient Kelsey. “I know
I’m running really smart races because I haven’t made the same mistakes I used
to make.”
