Peoria AZ jr. Kenyanna Wilson, the national leader before Bianca Knight took the track in Texas this weekend, was the favorite, but the 100 field was well-balanced with 11.5-11.6 types and without a real clear favorite. Wilson (right, by Photorun) accelerated into a small lead, however, and never let up to a solid win in a barely wind-legal (1.9) 11.48, a new PR and trailing only Knight outdoors this year. Coming to California and beating all of the Golden State girls was a nice revelation for her. “I’m very happy,” she said. “I came here without a lot of expectations, but I don’t always have a lot of competition in Arizona and I wanted to see how I compared to some of the fastest girls.” Wilson wasn’t necessarily expecting to see her track reversed, and conscientiously made the adjustments. “I had to remind myself to get out of the blocks and stay low and pump my arms hard. It’s important not to stand up too soon or the wind will push you too much.” How closely the field was matched was revealed in the next five girls finishing within 0.11 seconds, led by Valley Christian CA sr. Khrystal Carter’s 11.60. But Mt. Pleasant CA jr. Jeneba Tarmoh, 5 th in the 100, had other ideas. Running into a 1.7 breeze, she was the only runner to break 24 with her 23.93. Wilson was 2 nd at 24.10 and Williams 5 th at 24.55. “I pushed the curve, took a hard breath coming off the curve, then treated the straightaway like a 100,” said Tarmoh. Did running from lane 8 bother her? “Personally, I don’t mind lane 8. I prefer 5, 6 or 4, but I’d rather have 8 than 1, 2, or 3. I don’t like to see my opponents, I just like to go.” While Tarmoh has a good 100 history, when she went out at her League Final last year she started focusing on the 200. “It’s not necessarily my favorite event, but it’s the one I’m better at.” The sprints, thus, were won by three different athletes, despite all the double opportunities. Saturday, she had her own chance to show the grace of a champion. Running her first outdoor race of the season with renewed vigor, Williams sped into the homestretch with Deerfield FL jr. and national outdoor leader Brittany Jones at her side, a thrilling finish seemingly at hand. But Jones somehow caught a spike in her left shoe on the track and tumbled down with about 60 meters to go. No one else had a chance at Williams and she raced to the finish in 53.52. Then, showing her class, she waited at the line to see if she could help or comfort Jones as she jogged in. “(Jones falling) cut off my concentration for a moment and I wanted to stop and help her,” said Williams of the effect of the incident. “That’s why I waited for her at the finish.” Otherwise, Williams said the race “felt weird;” it was her first since NIN. Her own legs were giving her problems the down the stretch. “But my (club) coach (Chris Faulkner) told me to pump my arms and that would pull my legs through.” Jones received attention in the medical tent for scrapes and bruises, but her legs were okay, according to club coach Jeff Brown. photos by PhotoRun Girls 800: “I’m so tired I can’t smile” With West Catholic PA and 2:06 standout Latavia Thomas being no-shows to the meet, the girls 800 looked to be a tight battle with a bunch of evenly matched half-milers. It didn’t work out that way, though if the race had been 200 meters longer, the finish might have resembled that. Instead, Archbishop Mitty ( San Jose CA) jr Renisha Robinson, coming in with a 2:11.27 PR, ripped through the first two furlongs as if she’d been trying to stay with an imaginary Latavia. Hitting 28.5 and 62.6, she was either going to have a huge breakthrough or have a grueling encounter with the proverbial bear. Well, said bear did attach itself to Robinson’s back, but she drug it across the finish line before anyone could catch her. Her final two 200s were 33.2 and 36.7, but no one had the great finish to reel her in. It was Robinson in 2:12.56, 1.51 ahead of Marlborough ( Los Angeles CA) jr Kate Grace’s 2:14.07. “I’m so tired I can’t smile,” moaned Robinson afterward. “I really wanted to PR with Latavia in the race. I wanted to go out in 63-64, but when I heard the first splits, I was like, ‘Oh my God, slow down!’ I really needed to go out a little bit slower.” Women 800 Meter Run Invitational Castilleja ( Palo Alto CA) jr Tori Anthony walked through. With second-attempt clearances at 12-9 and 13-2, she took the gold and the national outdoor lead, improving her PR by two inches. Two more Californians, Edison sr Tori Pena and Desert Vista sr Jaci Perryman, cleared 12-3 for 2 nd and 3 rd, respectively. “I’m really excited,” said Anthony. “This is my first time here, my first big outdoor meet of the year, and the weather was beautiful.” She finished the night trying 13-6 for the first time, which would given her a share of 7 th on the all-time list of this quickly progressing event, and she had two fairly close misses. In the high jump, Stockdale CA sr Desirae Gondor served notice that she is ready to defend her state title by taking the field with a 5-9. She won in Sacramento last year with a 5-10 clearance; here, she made 5-9 on her third attempt. Costa Mesa CA sr Jasmine Day, last year’s state runner-up, held the same spot here as the only other jumper to make 5-7. Instead, it was Claremont CA sr. Ashika Charan who completely dominated the event with what could stand as one of the best series of the year. Not only was Charan’s opener of 41-5.5 the only mark over 40 feet, but she also had a 41-0.5, three more leaps over 40 feet, and a “worst” mark of 39-7.75. Charan had been nipped by Richardson by a quarter inch when they met at Simplot, despite a PR 41-10, and was clearly ready to face her again here. Hercules jr Jamesha Youngblood took second with a windy best of 39-6.5. All of Charan’s jumps dipped under the legal limit. The long jump was more competitive. Charan had the best mark coming in of 19-10, but the TJ obviously took something out of her as she took 3 rd with 18-8. Meanwhile, Diamond Ranch ( Ponoma CA) fr Karyn Dunn, a 19-2 leaper as a middle-schooler last year, spanned 18-11.25 on her second attempt to take the lead. Benicia soph Amber Purvis responded with a lifetime best 18-10.5 on her third jump, but that was it as far as challenging Dunn. Neither of them improved in the finals and the meet had a freshman long jump winner. Women Long Jump A consistent, dominant series is great, but it just takes one superior mark to win a throws competition. Amidst a series that included four fouls and another over 154 feet, San Jacinto sr. Sarah Robles got off a monster 160-2 throw on her second attempt to take the discus. The throw leads the nation and topped her old PR by more than six feet. Meanwhile, Bishop O’Dowd jr Miranda Wilson was listed with a throw of just 134 feet, but she had improved just the previous week at Stanford to 148. Here she put together a wonderful, consistent series of throws, five measured at 153 or better. Her new PR of 155-6, however, had to settle for 2 nd. Blackfoot ID sr Sarah Cardinal, a 154-9 performer, struggled a bit with two fouls and some short throws, but did hit 153-0 for 3 rd. Cascade (Turner WA) sr. Whitney Hooks entered the shot competition as the US#3 returnee at 49-2 from last year and didn’t disappoint, winning in 47-1.75. That’s thought to be the nation’s third best mark to date. Sultana CA sr. Florida Siaosi claimed 2 nd at 43-10.
