Brian Rhodes-Devey NY 4:13.19 US#1 outkicked Greg Kiley NY 4:15.12. Steve Murdock NY led through six laps, going through the half in 2:07, before Kiley spurted from fourth to first on lap 7. At the bell, Rhodes-Devey made his move and caught Kiley on the far turn. Prior season leader David Polgar MA scratched.

Both Rhodes-Devey and Kiley were worried about the other's kick. When Kiley sprinted to a big lead on lap 7, he knew he didn't have it won. "I know Brian," kiley said. "He's a 1:52 800 meter guy." At the same point, Rhodes-Devey knew he ad to stay in range of Kiley. "Kiley kicks like a mother," Rhodes-Devey said. "But I felt real good."
