Not touched were Maureen Griffin (Pocatello, Idaho)'s National record heave of 60-10 ½ in 1997 as well as Kristen Michalski (West Warwick, Rhode Island)'s meet best-ever of 60-8 ¾ in 2002. But it's the gold medal she collected, the champion's ring she signed up for, along with her huge margin of victory, that counted most to Bernhardt. Jennifer Mack of South Dakota's Custer High was a distant second at 48-11 ¾ with Allison Horner of Atlanta's Throw One Deep club third at 48-9. "I'm really happy to win the national championship, but I was really hoping to get the state and national records, too," said Bernhardt, who came in with a 2006 best of 56-7 ¼. "I wasn't worried about winning, it was more about the national record." The future literature major hopes to continue her throwing career as a collegian, with Kentucky, Louisville and Indiana State high on her list.
