Up, up and away, Katie Veith and Brittany Parker soared to the number two
and equal-number-three marks on the all-time NIN meet list with respective
clearances of 13-5 ¼ and 13-1 ½.
Only Mary Saxer's National-record leap of 14-2 for Lancaster, NY here last
year outranks these two.
Veith, a Homestead High of Fort Wayne, Indiana junior, was the nation's
only 14-footer coming in but settled for the gold at less than her best after
Parker, a McKinney, Texas senior, failed thrice at 13-5 ¼.
A 12-5 ½ clearance on second attempt gave the bronze to Allison Stokke of
the Newport Beach, California-based Higher Flyers Club.
Veith was not totally enthused by her performance.
"I felt like I did OK," she said. "It was all right, but I wanted to do
better."
