Breakdown:  This region’s key questions: How hard will Jack Bolas NC, run? Will the real Justin Harbor please stand up? Who, between Sandy Roberts NC, and Michael Eaton KY, will win this thing? And is the Brad Siragusa VA who was supposed to be the No. 6 returnee back for good now?

Bolas would certainly be the favorite at FL South, with his wins over Roberts, track credentials, and blistering kick. But with his team an NTN invitee, he will still attempt the tough triple, but reportedly running just hard enough here to qualify. With this region not as deep in studly runners as some years, I suspect he won’t let it drop any further than third.

That leaves Eaton and Roberts, with the former having put up a blistering set of solo performances in the Bluegrass State, and the latter having suffered three straight defeats to Bolas after beating him in Great American and other races. Roberts needs to win again, but this is Eaton’s time. He learned at state not to go out too fast and should bide his time for a mid-late race move. On the other hand, if Roberts can stay with him until the end, he may be able to outkick him, something he couldn’t do against Bolas. In any case, all three of these runners should be able to do as they please and make it back to San Diego.

Texans Duncan Phillips and Colby Lowe should get the next two spots. Phillips steadily ascended to become the state’s best by season’s end, while super soph Lowe confirmed the abilities implied by his early nation-leading 14:38 (on a course widely suspected to be short). Ben Hubers GA dominated his state all year and should fit in the middle of the top ten.

Harbor is next because I don’t know where else to put him. Mindful of his 14:57 at McAlpine last year, and his wins at the flrunners.com race and the best time of the day at Manhattan (in bad weather no less), I had him right up there with Roberts as the best in the region and a top ten pick at nationals. He’s since won state, but with a slower time than a lower class, and the Florida senior all-star meet. I heard, at least in the latter, however, that he wasn’t taking it seriously and will be ready this Saturday.

Kevin Schwab OK was in the same position as Lowe last year as a young runner with an outrageously fast time on a questionable course (14:45 on the old Chile Pepper course). He has progressed and improved since his 38th at FL South last year and should get in with room to spare this time.

Virginia should take the final two spots with the resurrected Siragusa and Mike Spooner. The former was the top FL returnee from last year from the state, but had lagged behind the leaders in big meets until at state when he finally beat Spooner, who in turn had earned the right of favorite by winning most of the year.

Analysis:

Not much has changed in the FL South region. We’ve talked about the big four of Roberts, Bolas, Eaton, and Harbor in our national discussion. While the first two have another date this weekend, the latter two are getting ready for state meets on November 12.

Region meets in Texas will start this weekend and things in that state will shake down all the way with state next weekend. While I think most would agree that Colby Lowe’s early-season 14:38 was not a legit 5k course, he did beat Daniel Gerber. Until the next two weeks, I’m going to leave my Texas guys in there as they’ve been.

While I don’t think this is a real outstanding year for Virginians (surely someone will call me out on this), I probably underrated them the first time around. Brandon Miles, who has been on that state’s scene for a long time with milestat.com, ranks Mike Spooner, Devin Cornwall, Abreham Daganchew, and Brad Siragusa as his top four. Yesterday, Spooner went 15:02 on Burke Lake’s 2.98M layout to win his region. State meet there is also Nov. 12.

Along with NC, we’ve got state meets this weekend in SC, TN, GA, AR, and MS. Ben Hubers seems like the overwhelming top dog in GA, but we’ll see how the times shake out on what’s usually a slowish course at Carrollton. Todd Smalling was tearing up TN early in the year, but has told me he’s struggling with injury problems. Rob Sorrell, Tom Divinnie and Clay Hannah are probably your next three contenders for FL contention.

Back to NC for a sec … Every year or two there’s a boy or girl in the independent schools that comes out as a true contender and Lewis Woodard will have to be as such after dominating that championship, his 15:33 winning by 37 seconds. He was 48th last year at FL South.

Analysis

Roberts may have been a lucky FL finalist last fall, but he has more than shown he deserved it ever since. He’s the best of a group that includes four FL Nationals returnees. First, he took 16th at FLN; then, he ran 8:59y/4:07y last spring; now he is the new Great American ROC titlist.

Leading returnee Harbor has taken a different route since his superb 3rd of last year, first placing last at FLN, then not really making a big splash in track. But wins at flrunners.com Invitational and, just last week, the fastest win of the day at Manhattan in conditions far from Floridian, have put him right back on the national contender short list.

Returnees Bolas and Eaton are also heavy, heavy favorites to make it back to San Diego, both having run strong since. Bolas was third at GA ROC and has been consistently strong in NC. Eaton has been devastating everywhere he’s run, but he hasn’t faced great competition yet.

After that, it’s much harder to sort out who’s ready to make that elite eight. None of the next three returnees – Fort, Siragusa, and Wilhelm – has been quite as impressive. That’s opened the door for No. 8 returnee Hubers, who has dominated Georgia and won some outside.

Texas, the region’s biggest state, has seen soph Colby Lowe move up and win the Texas A&M meet, and senior Daniel Gerber step up to take Chile Pepper. Oklahoma’s Cowboy Jamboree champ Kevin Schwab impressed as a soph last year and is poised to move up, while Todd Smalling has gotten healthy and potentially overtaken Rob Sorrell.

Breakdown:
After super-freshman Ashley Brasovan FL, the top part of this year’s FL South predictions look a lot like last year’s results … and why not? The top girls have done all the right things to stay on top.

Despite tough competition in her state from Kelly Parrish and others, Brasovan has backed up her fine Great American run and stayed on top there all year. There’s no reason to think she won’t continue. VA’s Aurora Scott also had a great run at GA, but has been hard to track down since mid-October, unless you look at road race results. I did and found a 16:55 5k from last week (she was second *overall*) on a course described as “not particularly fast.” She stays No. 2.

My top six also has three seniors who all qualified last year … and I obviously expect they will again. The vastly experienced Kate Niehaus SC, is actually going for her fourth trip to the finals and, with a state championship and a 16:59 in another race, it looks good for her. Same with Brooke Upshaw TX, who either trained through or wasn’t up to her region race, but then dominated at her state finals. Parrish hasn’t been able to beat Brasovan, but has still run strong all year and her experience should win her another trip.

The surprise pick to get in the top three is Bona Jones FL, however. She’s been coming on strong all year and getting closer to her in-state rivals. With the increased competition, I think this will be her breakthrough.

After that it gets tougher, with the top girls from GA, TX, and VA duking it out. Among the Georgians, I think Emily Borsare is the most talented, with some big wins, fast times, and having been 11th here last year, but she has lost a few head-to-heads to Emily Reese, even before she collapsed with the lead at state. Reese may be more talented that Drouin, but Drouin beat Reese at Furman and had the best time at state.

Texas has returning qualifiers in Miranda Walker (Upshaw’s teammate) and Carlene Mayfield, though both made it from NTN, not FL South. Both ran well at state and all year, despite Walker coming back from injury, but Nichole Jones was the best runner at TX state after Upshaw, so she’s surely in the mix.

At Virginia state, Catherine White and Rachel Rose impressively won different races, both under 18. Callen Fike has been the dominant runner in a slightly down year for North Carolina.

So, I say it’s gonna go White, Borsare, Nichole Jones, and Walker for the final four spots, with Drouin, Reese, Mayfield, Rose, and Fike all close by and ready to move in if someone has a bad day. That’s hardly all of the state champs that will be vying for spots, either. I’ve given some states, especially Florida, credit for having the most depth, which leaves out Laurel Pritchard AL, and Kathy Kroeger TN, among others. So we’ll see how it shakes out.

Analysis:

This region could come down to the prodigal talent of a couple of undergrads (fr Ashley Brasovan FL, soph Aurora Scott VA) against the experience of savvy seniors and juniors (Kate Niehaus SC, Emily Borsare GA, Brooke Upshaw TX, Kelly Parrish FL).

With their performances at flrunners.com and Great American, respectively, Ashley and Aurora have proven themselves. But their older counterparts are putting up some incredible times. Last weekend, Niehaus scorched a 16:49 in her region meet, while Borsare went 16:59 in hers, with the latter earning several rankings spots. Both compete in state meets Saturday.

Borsare’s is the biggest rankings move, but Callen Fike NC, Nichole Jones TX, and Bona Jones FL all worked their way in from honorable mention (and maybe having been under-ranked) with fast times. Fike ran 17:57 in her region and will be favored at her state meet tomorrow.

TX, VA, and FL all have their state meets next weekend and will begin sorting things ot with region and district battles this weekend. In TX, Southlake teammates Brooke Upshaw and Miranda Walker are always racing Keller’s Carlene Mayfield since they are in the same district, and their district matchup last week saw them run true to their ranking. But Jones, with a 10:40 at her district, is in the same conversation.

In FL, Bona Jones, who has a 17:48 to her credit, joins Emilie Amaro in chasing the times and placings of Brasovan and Parrish.

Analysis:

The South region has plenty of talented girls, both returning and newcomers. It has proven as much at numerous invitationals, last spring on the track, and most recently with some impressive showings at Great American. But the region has not, collectively, performed well at FL nationals this decade, with a string of last-place finishes among the regions. This year’s group could change that.

Six girls with FL Nationals experience have returned to the fray this fall and all are clearly in the running to get to San Diego again. Added to them is one of the best freshmen in the country – possibly among the top two – and several other quality runners who will be pushing for spots.

Experience is usually the key to a high ranking at this point in the fall, but Ashley Brasovan cannot be denied, given her major-meet record. At Great American, which proved to be an excellent measuring stick for the region, she took the seeded race in 17:33, a time only Aislinn Ryan beat in the ROC. That, combined with her blazing flrunners.com win over fellow Floridian Kelly Parrish, make her the No. 1 runner in the region this fall.

Scott, Niehaus, and Parrish are ranked in order of their times at Great American, though Scott ran in the University race. The order is also generally reflective of their other results, but they are obviously very close. Parrish, it should be noted, has superior track times, including her 10:22.74y at Nike Outdoor last year.

Texas champ Upshaw is mixed in as well. She had losses to teammate Miranda Walker and others early in the season, but has run better in October. Walker, for her part, is coming back from a toe injury after some dominant early-season wins. Carlene Mayfield, another returnee, is also in the mix. She won the big McNeil race, but has lost to her rivals recently. Many Texas races are still two miles.

“The Emilys” from Georgia, Emily Reese and Emily Borsare, also must seriously be considered, though they haven’t had much competition besides each other. Borsare was 11th last fall at FLS and is the sixth returnee, but Reese has had her number in two of three meetings.

West Virginia has had few representatives at nationals, but Rachel Buser, the No. 9 returnee, could add to the short list.
