BOYS ELITE PREVIEW

Team:

This promises to be a great competition with many of the top teams coming in rested after a week off from racing. SO#3 Cinco Ranch TX is favored and will face-off with SO#4 Kingwood TX, SO#6 Cedar Park TX, SO#7 The Woodlands TX (defending champ), SO#8 Marcus TX and SO#9 Southlake Carroll TX.  Oklahoma sends state #1 Mustangs and defending state 4A champ Bishop McGuiness.  State #3 Desert Vista will be traveling from Arizona to join the field.  Unfortunately defending LA state champ Jesuit of New Orleans is unable to attend as planned due to the impact of Hurricane Katrina.

Individual:

The cream of the crop includes Southlake Carroll TX soph Colby Lowe (state #1 returner, 30th at NTN as a frosh) who is undefeated this season, Mustang OK jr Kevin Schwab (state champ) with several course records as a sophomore including big wins at the OSU Cowboy Jamboree and Chile Pepper, and The Woodlands sr Daniel Gerber (4:17/9:10 PRs)(See Gerber's Training Blogger).

GIRLS ELITE PREVIEW

Team:

SO#1/US#6 Southlake Carroll TX is coming off a recent big win at Texas A&M.   They’ll be tested by SO#2/US#9 Kingwood TX (2004 Nike South champs), SO#3 Keller TX, SO#4 Marcus TX, SO#5 The Woodlands TX, SO#6 Cedar Park TX, SO#7 Cinco Ranch TX and SO#9 Mustang OK (may be without a full team).   Defending OK state 4A champ Bishop McGuiness and state #3 Desert Vista AZ are the strong out-of-state squads.

Individual:

This national-caliber field boasts Southlake Carroll’s superb 1-2 punch of Foot Locker finalist seniors Miranda Walker (state #2 returner, NTN 14th, 4:53/10:32) and Brooke Upshaw (state #1 returner, NTN 11th, 4:53/10:38).  They’ll be challenged by another Foot Locker finalist in Keller sr Carlene Mayfield (state #3 returner), Kingwood sr Danielle Selner (state #7 returner, NTN 36th, 4:54/10:36), Cedar Park sr Katie Weise who split the Carroll duo with a runner-up finish at Texas A&M, The Woodlands sr Cheryl Spring (Foot Locker South # 14 returner, 5:02/10:54) coming off a runner-up finish at last week’s U of Kansas Rim Rock Farm Classic, and Iowa LA state 3A champ Jennifer LaValley.

Prior Years:

2004 - The Woodlands TX boys (55) make a powerful statement in decisively beating a field of six NTN South Region teams, with Flower Mound (99) in second. Carroll Southlake's Kevin Ondrasek won his second straight major invitational in 15:51 5k. Woodlands seniors Ben Schulz and Luke Hansen were 4-5. Ondrasek’s split was 10:04 for 2 miles with J.B. Lagos (Flower Mound) and Beck Mitchell (Marcus Flower Mound) the closest pursuers. Lockhart TX sr Chris West had moved into 4th. Heading to the finish the top 3 did not change as Ondrasek won while Mitchell passed Lagos for 2nd. The Woodlands jr Daniel Gerber closed well the last mile to move from 8th to 4th and nearly catch Lagos at the line.

Kingwood handled the girls field, despite a 1-2 finish by Carroll Southlake's Miranda Walker and Brooke Upshaw. Carroll’s Walker and Upshaw ran side-by-side through 2 miles in 11:45 and had the race under control. Cheryl Spring held 3rd with Megan Munoz 4th, Kingwood jr Danielle Selner 5th and Cynthia Saentella 6th. Walker pulled away in the last 600m as her teammate Upshaw stayed close for the runner-up spot. Cheryl Spring finished 3rd as the top 6 did not change the final mile.

This first-year meet drew 6 of the top 10 NTN South Region boys teams and 7 of 10 on the girls side. This great line-up did not disappoint as both Elite races were hotly contested. The Woodlands TX boys and Kingwood TX girls confirmed their top rankings with convincing victories. The weather predictions of heavy rains with probably flooding were soon forgotten as it turned out to be a beautiful morning for running and watching.
