Galen Rupp destroys 10K record with 28:15.51 at Oregon Twilight meet -- 17 seconds better than Rudy Chapa's US Junior record set in 1976.
After running on the heels of rabbits for 15 laps, Rupp took the lead on lap 16 with a 65.5 tour and gapped Mike Donnelly by 100 meters as the Hayward Field crowd "went nuts," Marc Davis reported. Rupp looked strong throughout and was running fastest at the end, with a 64-second last lap and a big negative split of 5k's -- 14:17 and 13:58. "He's running all alone, except for the crowd, which is on its feet screaming," Davis said.

Rupp gives Oregon track fans a 3-course meal

So many flashbulbs went off you would of thought it was already the Fourth of July.

by Marc Davis

Two weeks ago, if Galen Rupp gave the Oregon track fans a little appetizer, then tonight he stuffed Track Town USA with a three course meal. Running like the hero he is slowly becoming in Eugene, Rupp destroyed Rudy Chapa's 26 year old American Junior record for 10,000 meters; clocking 28:15.51. In doing so, he also became the 3rd fastest 10k runner in Duck history, and fastest freshman ever at the U of O.

As I mentioned earlier, Rupp was said to have come into this race off of his highest mileage week ever (108 miles). We may of been told that he could be fatigued, but he showed no signs at all during his 25 lap history making victory. After following rabbits Max King and Issac Arusei for the first 5000 meters or so, he slowly moved up to 2nd place. However, for most of that time he seemed to be chomping at the bit to push the pace. But you could imagine his coaches on the side of the track saying, "Easy now, wait for the right moment". So after 4 miles into the race, the right moment came and Rupp stormed to the front. At that moment, you just knew that something special was going to happen tonight. And of course the track smart fans knew this to be true. Because the energy in the stadium rose to a fever pitch.

Even though at one point Rupp was not only behind the goal time of 28:20, but also behind Rudy Chapa's record of 28:32, Galen seemed to change gears going into the final laps; much to the delight of the crowd. I could barely hold my watch steady to read off the splits as Rupp sprinted down the final stretch with a 64 second last lap. So many flashbulbs went off you would of thought it was already the Fourth of July. I had the pleasure of talking with Galen right after the race, and here's what he had to say:

Marc Davis: "How does it feel to break Rudy Chapa's record, and to do it here in Eugene"?

Galen Rupp: "It means a lot. I know Rudy pretty well from being up in Portland where he lives. He said he wanted me to go after it, and that I had a good chance of breaking it. He's a really supportive kind of guy, and I have a good friendship with him. This was of course a lot better than my first race here".

MD: "How did you think your chances were going into the race to break the record?"

GR: "My training has been going phenomenally well. I honestly thought coming into this that I had a chance to get the record. My intentions were to go out and really see if I could go with the leaders. I was really confident the whole time coming into this race. My birthday is tomorrow, so that was a better omen than having my tires slashed on my car."

MD: "What was it like the final 100 meters with the crowd on their feet"?

GR: "It was awesome. To win a race here wearing an Oregon uniform; there's nothing like it. It feels so good to run here in front of these fans. I really can't describe it. In high school, you think about running here at Hayward Field in a Duck uniform, and everyone going nuts for you. You just can't ask for a better environment to run a race in".

MD: "It seemed that the pace fell off a bit there. Were you ever concerned?"

GR: "The pace was great at first. We were running 67's, and then in the middle we had a lot of 69's. I think we even ran a 70 lap here and there. I wanted to pick it up, but I was told to stay where I was, and not worry about the pace too much. About then with 6 laps to go I finally realized that I was on pace to break the record".

MD: "So around 6000 meters you picked it up. Was it a conscious thought, or were you just starting to feel good?"

GR: "I felt really great for the first half of the race. And when the last rabbit stepped off, I just wanted to make sure that I didn't go too hard. I just wanted to stay at 68's. But every time you hit the main straightaway, the crowd starts cheering like crazy, and you can't help but pick it up. I actually wanted the rabbit to pick it up a bit, but in the end I guess it worked out just fine".

Just fine indeed. It's truly been a while since a distance runner has taken the fans at Hayward Field to the level of excitement that Galen Rupp has done in one single night. And where he takes them from here remains to be seen. But as a writer and as a fan I can tell you one thing for sure. For the next 4 years, track season will not come too soon to Eugene, Oregon. And I hope no one is too full from the meal Rupp served up tonight, because I truly feel that the "chef" is just wetting our appetite.

Galen Rupp guns for 10K record
U. of Oregon freshman Galen Rupp, who took seven seconds off Gerry Lindgren's 1964 national HS record for 5000 meters last year, will try to bring down another long standing record Saturday night at the Oregon Twilight meet at fabled Hayward Field in Eugene OR. Rupp is primed to challenge the US junior record for 10,000 meters -- 28:32.7 by Rudy Chapa in 1976 -- which is also the national high school record. DyeStat will have live, lap by lap reports in this space from 1986 Kinney/Foot Locker cross country national champion Marc Davis, who still holds the US 5k road record for 5000 meters (13:24) and was an Olympic finalist in the 3k steeplechase in 1996.

EUGENE OR 5/7/05 -- This weekend, a handfull of top 10k runners are gathering in Track Town USA to battle it out. The city of Eugene, OR will host the Oregon Twilight on Saturday night; with events starting at 4pm (PST).

Among the entrants are Adam Goucher, who is a 2000 Olympian and a four time U.S. National Champion. Goucher, who also has four NCAA titles to his resume, will be going after the U.S. National qualifying time of 28:40. He is the 1993 Kinney/Foot Locker National Champion, and has a PR of 13:11 for 5k. This will be his debut in the longer distance.

Also Mike Donnelly, who has a personal record of 28:02 in the 10,000, and 13:35 in the 5k. He was 4th place in the 2004 Olympic Trials in the 10,000 meters. Donnelly, who lives and trains just up the road in Portland, is coming off a 6th place finish at the US National 15k Road Championships in Jacksonville, FL earlier this Spring.

Peter Julian, formally of Ashland, OR and now Head Track Coach at Metro State College in Denver, comes in with PR's for 5k and 10k of 13:33 and 28:05 respectively. He was the Pan American Bronze Medalist in the 10,000 in 1999. A member of several World Cross Country Championship teams, Julian was also a member of the US Team for the 1999 World Outdoor Track and Field Championships in the 10k.

Pacing duties will be handled by Max King and Kenyan runner Issac Arusei. King, who competes for local club Team XO, recently came off a victory and PR of 8:40 for the 3k Steeple at the Oregon Invitational. Pacers are set to go out in 28:20 to 28:25 pace (68 seconds per lap pace).

The runner in the 10k event who seems to be getting the most press, however, is not a US Open Champion. He has not made any Olympic Teams. And he has no Open National titles. Not yet! Galen Rupp is one the most talked about young runners in the emerging United State track scene. He does have US Junior records in the 2000, 3000, and recently added the 5000 meters just last summer (13:37). Now a member of the University of Oregon Duck Track Team, he is going after one of the toughest Junior Records of them all. Rudy Chapa, formerly a Duck himself, ran 28:32 back in 1979 at the Twilight Meet. Saturday night, Rupp is attempting to complete the "cycle", by adding the 10k to his list of US Junior Records. I spoke with Alberto Salazar, his former coach and ironically former teammate of Rudy Chapa, to see what he thinks about Galen's chances.

"I think he's in shape to to stay with those guys up front", said Salazar. "In fact, everyone seems to feel that he's in the best shape of his life. He ran his highest mileage ever last week (a whopping 108 miles!!!!), so he's coming into this a bit fatigued. He's not rested like some other events. But a lot of the times, that can work out best for you. He's very, very strong right now".

This should be an exciting night of track and field on Saturday. Along with the growing reputation of the University of Oregon Track Team, the distance events will once again be highlighted with what many are saying will be a record setting evening. I'll be there to give you up to date and blow by blow action of the 10,000 meter record attempt. So check DyeStat page 1 for live updates, and don't miss a second of the excitement. The 10k starts at 7:35pm (PST). After the race, check here for a post-race interview with Rupp and the other runners in the event.
