Second straight year and second straight meet record
The event started with a shocker as a false start resulted in the disqualification of Shirene Pinnock JAM, who was second to Leach last year but beat Leach at the World Juniors last summer. After Pinnock was led off in tears, Leach hit the first hurdle and trailed Jamaican high school champion Nickiesha Wilson down the backstretch. Leach gathered steam on the turn and took the lead at the top of the stretch.
| Shirene Pinnock covered her eyes (below left) as the race started without her. Afterward, Leach came over to console her. "I just told her that the races aren't over . . . . to get ready for the relays," Leach said. Leach also said that when the starter recalled the race, "I thought it might be me. They were looking my way." But they were looking at Pinnock in the adjacent lane. |
