Three US#1 marks
and a sizzling girls 4x200

New US#1 season leaders were posted by West Catholic PA sr Nicole Leach 54.90 (in a barn burner over Devon Williams and Fracene McCorory), West Catholic PA jr Latavia Thomas 2:12.73 800 (catching Sarah Bowman VA 2:14.08 US#2 on the last lap), and Western Baltimore jr Theresa Lewis 8.01 55H. Best race of the meet, though, was the girls 4x200. Leach's leadoff put West Catholic out in front, but McCorory's sizzling 23.5 anchor leg brought the sellout crowd to its feet and Bethel VA to victory in 1:41.58. This is the fourth best time in the nation this year, and the other three were all on the super fast banked Mondo at the NY Armory.

Notes from the meet director

by Tom Rogers

Well, I guess you could say that we couldn't be more delighted with the results of the 4th annual Montgomery Invitational. We had 13 meet records, with several being national leaders and it was by far the best meet ever in our young history.

The girls 400m was a meet directors dream. How many times do you have the opportunity to put the national leaders at 300m,400m and 500m on the track in the same race and have it be everything you could have dreamed of! Leach went through the first 200m in 25.5 and seemed to be saying "if you want to beat me you're gonna have to come get me". Williams and McCorory made late charges but couldn't catch the powerful Leach. (54.90 was a PG Sportsplex fieldhouse record - a place where 4 NIC's have been held!)

The 800m was another great race between Thomas and Bowman with Sarah taking the early lead, but Latavia's smooth stride overtaking her the last 250m and turning out a 2:12.73 NL to Bowmans 2:14.08. (Sarah looked a little flat after her disappointing mile).

Theresa Lewis's 8.01 NL in the 55H (also a fieldhouse record) was the most impressive indoor hurdle race I've ever seen, but the most exciting and amazing race of the day was the girls 4x2. West Catholic got out to an early lead with a great lead-off leg by Leach, but McCorory came charging back from about 20m behind with a 23.5 anchor leg that brought the SRO crowd (the meet was a sellout as the fire marshall close the doors by noon!) to it's feet and gave Bethel the win in 1:41.58 on a flat track! (Tom Martin said it made the hair on the back of his neck stand up!)      With all of the confusion over sanctioning issues, I guess I'm quite happy to say that New York's loss was Maryland's gain! : )
