Race walk officials watch the walkers intently. One foot must be on the ground at all times. Jan Price was stationed on the backstretch.

Texas turtles dominate
by Elliot Denman
America needs more racewalking enthusiasts to match the zeal of Mr. A.C. Jaime.
The McAllen, Texas-based Jaime has encouraged hundreds of youngsters to
take up the walking game and now they're making their mark on the national stage.
Walker-up to New Jersey's Zach Pollinger last year, South Texas Walking
Club's Christopher Diaz moved to the top of the podium this time.
His time of 6:47.05 was lots slower than his 6:22.70 last year, but got
plenty of crowd support as he dueled it out with South Texas teammate Roberto
Vergara.
It was Vergara's 6:49.40 clocking that was the eye-opener, setting a
national freshman record in the process, displacing the 7:08.55 by Pollinger.
Long Islander Michael Kazmierczak interrupted the Texas spree with his
third-place 7:03.24, while Ricardo Vergara, twin of Roberto, landed fourth in
7:07.60 - also under the old national freshman figures - with yet another Vergara
brother, Ernesto, a junior, fifth in 7:29.48.
A total of six Texas walkers made the trip North - thanks to Mr. Jaime's
support, and wound up with five of the top seven spots in the boys race. (Ruby
Perez was 18th in the girls race.)
Next big one for Diaz and team will be the USA Junior Trials for the
Pan-Am Cup 10K, April 3 on Long Island.
The Texans - nicknamed the Turtles - may soon acquire a big-time
coach-in-residence. Two-time 20K Olympian Tim Seaman hopes to move to the McAllen area
and set up shop as South Texas\ambassador to the wide, wide world of
international racewalking. |

Girls
Cathy Hayes has long range plans
by Elliot Denman
Cathy Hayes is prepared to wait. Instead of declaring herself a candidate
for the 2008 Beijing-bound USA Olympic team, she's pointing to the 2012 Games
- location to be determined in July. By then, she expects to be a graduate of Drake University and solidly
entrenched as an international-caliber racewalker.
A 7:28.84 Nike triumph was her second straight in Landover and again
pointed to her stature as one of the nation's top young prospects in racewalking, a
discipline within track and field in urgent need of eager youngsters.
With only Maine and New York hosting formal racewalking programs for girls
within the high school track structure, athletes such as Hayes - a senior at
Oconomowoc High in Wisconsin - have found their way through USATF, Junior
Olympic and club programs.
She'd won the 2004 Nike title in the national-record time of 7:00.94 -
but wasn't pressed to challenge her own mark. Reeling off splits of 1:43 (400 meters), 3:36 (800) and 5:32.6 (1200), she breezed home in 7:28.84.
Tina Peters, a junior at Ohio's Yellow Springs High, set a PR of 7:42.31
taking second place with Lauren Forgues of Boothbay, Maine a close third in
7:49.58.
For the Peters family, though, it was a tough weekend. Her dad, Vince
Peters, USATF national racewalking chairman, and his daughter drove here from Ohio.
But his car was stolen from their motel parking lot Friday night, leaving
him scrambling to find a way to get home after the meet.
Twenty-four walkers, representing seven states, competed in the event
staged in two sections. Amanda Johnson of Morganfield, Ky. (8:24.30) beat Fair
Lawn, NJ, eighth-grader Allison Snochowski (8:29.24) to take the first race.
Hayes already has tasted senior-level competition, placing sixth in last
month's USATF Indoor Nationals 3000-meter walk in Boston. Her next big target
will be the Pan-Am Cup junior race to be held in Peru in May.
"I was so happy to see so many competitors in the race, that was awesome,"
said Hayes. "That's great for racewalking."
She was one of just two seniors in the top 12, auguring well for the event's
future.
