Boys - Girls
Lauren Stewart TN
Brentwood Academy seniors Lauren Stewart (below) and Philipa Davies were on the medal stand again this year. Stewart moved up from third last year to win gold, and Davies repeated as the silver medal winner.
Boys
Daniel Kinsey
by Elliott Denman Daniel Kinsey finished only ninth in the concluding 1,000-meter run with a
2:59.67 clocking, but it didn't really matter by then. The Wellsville, Ohio senior had built up an early lead and wasn't about to be displaced.
With his marks of 8.47 in the 60-meter hurdles, 21-3 ¼ in the long jump, a solid 51-4 ¼ in the shot put, and 6- 1 ¼ in the high jump, he had it wrapped up before the 1,000 started. Kinsey's total of 3,736 points won out over Westminster, Maryland's Tim Wunderlich (3,666) and Central Bucks East, Pa.,'s Duane Hynes (3,628.)
The 3,736 score was the third highest in Nike meet annals, topped only by Marcell Allmond of Santa Fe Springs, California's 3,908 in 1999 and Michael Feathers' 3,772 for Grand Island, NY last year.
Kinsey called his performance "average." Then again, it was just his third meet of the indoor season. "It was a pretty close competition there between the top three," he said. "We all knew it was going to be close coming into this meet. I'm just glad that I came out on top. He'd liked to have done much better in the shot, after 55-foot warmups, but it didn't happen. And he'd expected to long jump over 22.
Bottom line: "not terrible, but I know I can do a lot better. Finally, the 1000 was "kind of rough; I don't really like running distance."

Girls
Stanford-bound Lauren Stewart wins easily
by Elliott Denman
Stanford-bound Lauren Stewart, the multi-skilled Brentwood, Texas senior,
moved to third on the all-time Nike meet charts with her decisive 3,640-point
triumph. Only Gayle Hunter's 3,709 last year for Riverside, California, North, and
Diane Pickler's 3,641 for Rowlett, Texas in 2002 now rank ahead of Stewart on
the meet leaders list.
Stewart made it look easy, with outright firsts in the high jump (5-4 ½)
and long jump (18-10 ¾) wrapped around marks f 9.12 in the 60 hurdles, 33-6 ¼
in the shot put, and a wrap-up 2:33.49 800 meters.
Franklin, Tennessee's Philipa Davies, Stewart's teammate at Brentwood Academy, was a distant second at 3,507, with
West Covina, California's Ashika Charan third at 3,428.
Stewart climbed from third at Nike in 2004 to the top of the podium this
time.
"I just worked really hard over the fall and winter," she said, "and I
going to pay off in the spring." She missed a 5-5 HJ attempt here but knows this is her best event.
"I've jumped 6 feet before at state last year, outdoors. The high jump was
a little shaky today, but I'm happy with what I did."
Obviously, her team gets a lot of mileage out of her at big meets.
"I do quite a few events, yes. And, actually I like the triple jump which I
didn't do today; I have to call it my favorite."
She added 78 points to her 2004 performance at Nike.
"Yeah, that's a PR," she said. "Nothing to complain about there."
"I'm not sure if I'll be doing multis, jumping or what (at\Stanford.)
"Whatever I do, I'm really excited about going there."
At Palo Alto, she'll join ex-Nike TJ champion Erica McClain, among others.
"That will definitely be great. She's such a great triple jumper and it will be neat to train with her."
Her bottom line goal before HS graduation:
"Just to help my team out as much as possible and get PRs
along the way." |
