Boys

Jared Huske lives up to US#1 ranking

by Elliott Denman

Nine heats advanced 18 to the semis with Topeka, Kansas' Jared Huske (8
seconds flat) and Katy, Texas' Trevor Gerland (8.03), seniors both, setting the
early pace.

Huske improved to 7.81 in the semis, trailed by Clayton, NC's Johnny Dutch at
7.90, Norwich, Ct.'s Myles Bradley at 7.91, and Gerland at 7.93.

Huske, bound for Oregon, came in as the national leader at 7.86, and went
home as national champion in 7.78 and ninth on the all-time charts. It took a
magnifying glass to separate Texas-bound Gerland and Anderson, SC's Dennis
Martin, headed for Florida, in the duel for second. On close examination, the
verdict went to Gerland, 7.825 to 7.828. UCLA recruit Bradley was a close fourth
in 7.88 as seniors took the top four spots.

Dutch.set a new national sophomore class record with his prelim time of 7.90,
and he was fifth in the finals just a hundredth slower.

Girls

Kira Robinson is class of a good field

by Elliott Denman

There was little to choose between top choices Theresa Lewis, a Randallstown,
Md. junior, and Denver senior Kira Robinson in the morning prelims. Lewis
took heat three in 8.68; Robinson sped 8.73 in heat seven.

Robinson, another star of the Colorado Flyers, stepped it up to 8.59 to pace
the semifinals, with other semi wins going to Lewis at 8.66 and Ypsilanti,
Mich. senior Tiffany Ofili at 8.84. It took an 8.94 to make the six-runner final.

With everything on the line, though, Robinson sped away from the pack for a
convincing win. She blazed home in 8.37, time that was just 1/100th off the
Nike meet record (by Perdita Felicien in 1999), sixth best ever, and 4/100ths
over the National best-ever (by Charmaine Walker in 1987.) Felicien went on to
win the World Championships 100 hurdles gold medal for Canada in 2003; Robinson
seems to have the talent to race at that level herself, perhaps not that far
into the future.

Lewis clocked an 8.65 taking the silver, Ofili nabbed third in 8.71, and
Ewing, NJ's Jenise Jones ran fourth in 8.87.

"I was a little nervous, they were holding us for a while,": said Robinson.
But all that vanished when the gun sounded.
"I'm happy. I think I finished off the indoor season pretty well. I'm
excited."
Her big goal oudoors: Qualify for World Juniors.
Her college choice: "I have no idea."
