NTN Southwest Rankings - Pre-Season

The NTN regional rankings are the basis of the NTN team selection process. The top two teams in each region at the end of the season will be invited to compete in the Nike Team Nationals in Portland Dec. 4. The third and fourth place teams in each region are considered for the four national at-large selections.

Albuquerque Academy returns a stunning 9 of its top 10, including a pair of star frontrunners to rekindle memories of its national Top 10 squad of a few years ago. Perennial power Mountain View has major gaps to fill, with young talent being asked to duplicate the huge clutch-time efforts found so customary in its recent squads. Denver South is essentially a reincarnation of the #4-ranked nationally Denver West team of a year ago, with coach and athletes relocating in high-profile fashion several months back. South has the two stars and young talent moving up. Desert Vista is deep yet again while Los Alamos build seeks to build a superb boys team to go along with its national blockbuster girls crew. Smoky Hill has everyone returning, including Foot Locker finalists Katelyn Kaltenbach and Morgan Schulz and adds a top girl from Arizona. Los Alamos has nearly everyone returning, but awaits the decision of whether one key scorer moves out of state. Reno, headlined by Foot Locker runner-up Marie Lawrence, is effectively filling gaps with fine age-group talents this fall. Fremont and Mountain Pointe also lose no one from last year’s successful squads.

NTN will select two teams from each region, plus four at large teams to compete in the cross country team championships. The Harrier magazine has published regional rankings for years for the four Foot Locker regions. We reviewed data for 2003 and selected the top 10 teams in each of the eight new NTN regions.
