NTN Heartland Rankings - Pre-Season

The NTN regional rankings are the basis of the NTN team selection process. The top two teams in each region at the end of the season will be invited to compete in the Nike Team Nationals in Portland Dec. 4. The third and fourth place teams in each region are considered for the four national at-large selections.

Roosevelt returns boys who went 1-2 at the state meet, plus others of note including state 400 champ (47.3) who has also toured in the 15:50s for 5k cross-country. Marshall loses a top runner (residence move) but remains a fierce local power. Liberty is stacked yet again, with Stillwater courting perhaps its best squad since its national #1 team of 1997. Foot Locker contender Ramsey Kaven leads Yankton, which has everyone back and is much improved. Iowa City West also welcomes the full crew back, paced by its own state champion plus a state champion transfer moving in from Louisiana. West Plains, which closed 2003 ranked sixth nationally, has its key scorers of a year ago again on board to pose a viable threat.

NTN will select two teams from each region, plus four at large teams to compete in the cross country team championships. The Harrier magazine has published regional rankings for years for the four Foot Locker regions. We reviewed data for 2003 and selected the top 10 teams in each of the eight new NTN regions.
