NTN Northeast Rankings - Pre-Season

The NTN regional rankings are the basis of the NTN team selection process. The top two teams in each region at the end of the season will be invited to compete in the Nike Team Nationals in Portland Dec. 4. The third and fourth place teams in each region are considered for the four national at-large selections.

Christian Brothers Academy is tabbed as the favorite in the region, boasting a terrific young team whose summer time trials match its best teams ever. Toms River North might appear as a surprising pick to some, but with key people back who were either hurt or sick last season, the battle for New Jersey supremacy should be a tight one. Cedar Cliff welcomes back 6 of 7 from its Pennsylvania state champion team and could break into a regional automatic spot by the time November rolls around. New York schools are very tightly bunched on the early for charts as no big-name powerhouse like last year’s Shenendehowa team is on board. The sensational Saratoga Springs program (national champions seven times) might be fielding its best squad ever this time out, with everyone returning off last year’s national champions and being joined by major transfer talent. Bay Shore has the ignominious distinction of being paired in Saratoga Springs’ region, but returns 11 of its top 12, including the nucleus of of its national record-setting distance medley relay squad from track. Hatboro-Horsham returns its wealth of talent from a year ago intact, with the addition of a top transfer possibly arming it for a challenge for an automatic berth.

NTN will select two teams from each region, plus four at large teams to compete in the cross country team championships. The Harrier magazine has published regional rankings for years for the four Foot Locker regions. We reviewed data for 2003 and selected the top 10 teams in each of the eight new NTN regions.
