| Donna on the Side: Hall of Fame opening - the meet

This year's New Balance Games marks the grand re-opening of the National Track and Field Hall of Fame, which has been moved from Indianapolis to the New York Armory. There are three floors of exhibits wrapped around the rejuvenated competition facility on the third floor. DyeStat has on-site coverage of both the meet and the Hall of Fame.

Two fabulous finishes in the HS invitational miles
Boys Invitational Mile - Gavin Coombs 4:11.35 (76) with a tremendous stretch drive over Hakon Devries 4:11.38 (65), Jeremy Zagorski 4:11.87 (74), Kevin Tschirhart 4:12.69, Steve Hallinan 4:12.72, Andre Silva 4:12.86, Brian McCabe 4:14.86 and Ari Zamir 4:15.73. Devries set the pace through half in 2:04.9 and then gave way to Steve Hallinan at the end of three quarters in 3:10.8. Zagorski took the lead at the bell, but Devries surged back in front on the backstretch, only to be caught at the tape by Coombs.

Girls Invitational Mile - Heather Iatauro 4:53.79 US#3 this season caught Laura Cummings 4:53.82 US#4 in the lunge for the tape.

Iatauro is jubilant after the race.

Women's Elite Mile - Saratoga soph Nicole Blood ran 7th in 4:48.82, a personal record and the fastest high school mile in the US this season. In traffic early (below), Blood dropped back to seventh midway and ran alone the rest of the way with big gaps in front and behind her. Blood was delighted with the PR and said she learned a lot from the race.

Boys 4x200 - Camden 1:28.09 US#1 this season,
shaking off Elzie Coleman's 21.2 second leg for Newburgh 1:29.54.
Girls 4x200 - Camden 1:43.27

Girls Sprint Medley - West Catholic PA 4:06.70, with Nicole Leach leading off, Erica Ferguson and Ciarra Lawson in the middle legs (below) and Latavia Thomas (right) anchoring.

New display of the Armory high school records. The Boys 2 mile record -- 9:01.62 by Brian Dalpiaz last year -- fell to Josh McDougal and Galen Rupp in the men's elite race.

Elite race entries

The New Balance Games, which was the scene 3 years ago of Alan Webb's indoor record 3:59.86 mile against elite athletes, may be the platform again this year for a HS athlete running great times with elites. An elite New York Road Runners Record Challenge 2-mile race has been added for the 9th running of the meet at the New York Armory January 24, and two high school runners are entered in hopes of climbing the all time lists in Jack Shepard's HIGH SCHOOL TRACK annual. The prep runners are Galen Rupp, a senior at Central Catholic high school in Portland OR, and Josh McDougal, a home schooled senior from Peru NY. Rupp, who was second in the Foot Locker cross country finals in San Diego in December, could hope for a historical parallel. Webb was second at Foot Locker nationals in December 2000 before setting his record at the New Balance Games in January. McDougal, who was fourth at Foot Locker nationals, ran a 4:13.79 US#1 mile at the Dartmouth Relays on January 11. The only high school runners to crack the all time indoor 2-mile top 10 list in recent years are Alan Webb (8:45.19 at the Nike Indoor Classic in 2001) and Dathan Ritzenhein (8:50.4 in 2001). The record is 8:40.0 by Gerry Lindgren in 1964, followed by Jeff Nelson's 8:42.7 in 1979 and Webb.

Saratoga NY sophomore Nicole Blood will also test the elite waters in the women's mile. Blood won last year's HS girls mile in New Balance meet record time of 4:54.78. She followed that up by winning last year's Millrose Games high school mile in 4:52.00, second fastest girls time ever in that meet.

Rupp warmed up for New York by running 4:10.95 in an open mile at the University of Arkansas Invitational January 16.
