The Scene

The Dyes Receive Public Service Award.
Dr. Norbert Sander, President of the Armory Foundation, and Michael Frankfurt, Chairman of the Board of the Armory Foundation, present an award to Donna and John Dye for Outstanding Public Service To The Sport of Track & Field. "Now you get to be in front of the camera," said Dr. Sander. "Thanks for all you do."


This photo was taken by Derek Dye, whose track and field accomplishments in high school high jump along with his sister Natalie, in the pole vault, were the reasons for the start of DyeStat. Derek is now a Naval Officer and Natalie is in a PhD fellowship program in biochemistry at Stanford.

Jeff Day with Dad, Dick. Jeff, a freshman at Tennessee, won Section 1 of the Championship Mile at 4:08.25. Moving on from High School, Dad continues his exuberant support and cheering for Jeff. Both are having fun! Great going to both of you.

Paige Miller and Clara Horowitz from Duke took 1st and 2nd in the Women's 3000 Championship Race.
Clara Horowitz and Dad Jeff. Dad continues to be Clara's best fan, coming in from California to see her run here.

Joe Kleinerman Scholarships

In honor of Coach Joe Kleinerman, who passed away in November 2003, the New York Road Runners Club (NYRR) established its first-ever scholarship. The Joe Kleinerman Scholarship is awarded annually to a scholastic runner who is graduating from a New York City public high school and continuing on to college. Basis of selection is athletic and academic achievement.

Coach Kleinerman was a member of the track and cross country teams at New York's DeWitt Clinton High School and served as captain of the cross country team in 1928. He graduated from DeWitt Clinton in 1928 and then attended City College and Kansas State University.

Kleinerman went on to distinguish himself as a runner, coach and administrator of the sport. For years he served as coach of the Millrose Athletic Association.

The first two Kleinerman Scholarship winners, receiving a check for $3,000 each, were Natasha Hastings, A. Phillip Randolph High School and Saidu Hurbert Ezike, Port Richmond High School. Presenters included: Allan Steinfeld, President, New York Road Runners (NYRR), May Wittenberg, Executive Vice President NYRR, Deena Ferguson, Niece of Joe Kleinerman, Jake LaSala, Joe Kleinerman Scholarship Fund Administrator, Michael Frankfurt, Armory Foundation, and Susan Cuttler, NYRR.

Ed Gorman receives the Officials Service Award from John Chaplin, US Head Men's O;ympic coach in Sydney and this meet's referee.
Marty Stern receives the College Coach's Service Award from George Williams, the US head men's Olympic coach for 2004 Games.
Marty is a former coach of Villanova Universtiy.
Six Olympians as coaches, trainers and leaders were honored for their work to inspire younger athletes: Lynda Blutreich, assistant coach at Duke, represented the US in the javelin in Sydney in 2000; Tom Farrell, assistant coach at St. John's won a bronze medal in the 800m in Mexico City in 1968; Neville Hodge, head coach at Morgan State, competed in three olympic games, in the 100m, 200m and 4x100 for the Virgin Islands; Curtis Frye, Head Coach at South Carolina has been named assistant coach to the 2004 US Olympics coaching staff; Chris Huffins, head coach at U of California won the bronze medal in the decathlon in Sydney; Marcus O'Sullivan, head coach at Villanova ran in four Olympic Games in the 800 and 1500m for Ireland; Andrew Valmon, coach at Maryland won gold medals in two different Olympics.
Louise Clark and Son, Paul Dantzler, United States Air Force. Paul drove 20 hours from South Dakota to hear his Mom sing the National Anthem. Louise sings a wonderful classy and upbeat version that inspires the crowd.
Father John Pierce O.F.M . Father John was on the sidelines taking in the action and cheering for the athletes one and all. Father Pierce is a Franciscan priest at the Saint Anthony Friary in New Jersey. His life has been filled with many experiences in the service of the church.

International Guests

For the second year in a row, participants came from as far away as France.
