Northport NY 10:15.70

A thrilling battle of three anchors went to Northport soph Kevin Tschirhart over Fordham Prep's Brian McCabe and Cardinal O'Hara's Steve Hallinan. Northport won an early duel with Blair, but Fordham rode into contention on Conrad Dalton's 1:53.7 split on the 800m leg. Fordham (McCabe) and Northport (Tschirhart) were alone in front as the 1600 meter anchor leg started. With two laps to go, Hallinan made it a threesome as the intensity built. At the bell Hallinan, Tschirhart and McCabe were on each others heels in that order going into the first turn. McCabe then made his move, triggering a controversial incident that was much debated on TrackTalk. As McCabe bid for the lead, he either did or did not cut in too quickly, and Tschirhart either did or did not stiff arm McCabe into the next lane. In any event, Tschirhart soon had the lead and sprinted home 5 seconds ahead of McCabe. Fordham Prep was second in 10:20.49 and
Cardinal O'Hara third in 10:21.14.
