4xMile Relays

Davidson Hilliard boys 17:30.45
Saratoga Springs NY girls 20:42.74

steveu's Distance Report

by Stephen (steveu) Underwood

Seven places and about 10 seconds were too much for Steve Magness to overcome. But one spot and a few ticks was the winning recipe for Christian Nichols.
Thus, what many thought would be the record-setting party for FMR (Plano/Spring, Texas) in the men’s 4 x 1 Mile race Saturday morning wound being a near-meet-record for a Hilliard-Davidson, Ohio squad which had each of its members run personal bests. Nichols’ anchor of 4:11.3 closed out a 17:30.45, nearly 7 seconds up on FMR’s 17:37.03 (Magness 4:09).

Meanwhile, the girls of Saratoga Springs (Kinetic Track Club) had to prove they could win “Blood-lessly” – and they did, their 3rd-leg giving them the lead for good in a 20:42.74 effort, over 13 seconds up on fellow New Yorkers Elmira Southside.

Boys Details

FMR seemed to be the big story, but there was an all-senior Ohio team that knew if they could get their anchor in good position, they’d have a great chance. But Hilliard-Davidson could have succumbed to disaster right away. When the field was called back twice because of falls, H-D’s Alan Burkitt suffered the most. “The kid that fell first chafed my leg, then I fell the second time,” he said.

But while he could have resorted to the old comic punchline, “That’s gonna leave a mark (and he wound up with two spike marks),” he actually used it to his advantage. “It helped, I think, because I got a lot of nervousness out,” he said. “And then I was happy because one of the kids that was from Ohio, LaSalle, was here and I knew I could run with him.”

Burkitt, a 4:20 1600 runner, went 4:21.9 to wind up 4th, with LaSalle’s Eric Mayhaus leading in 4:19.9 and FMR well back in about 4:37.

H-D No. 2 man Alex Bailey’s strategy was to not do too much too soon. “My approach was just to catch the people in front of me and hand off in the best position,” he said. “I ended up handing off in second, so I was happy with that. I wasn’t going to go out in 60 and try and pick them off. I’m more of an acceleration (and 2-mile) type of guy.”

Bailey ran 4:28.7, but LaSalle still led with a 4:28 from Dan Mink. The 3rd leg then featured a 3rd-lap surge by Jim Wyner of Mainland Regional (NJ), but LaSalle’s Kyle Dragan grabbed the lead back on the final lap. But meanwhile, H-D’s Ryan Spellman (4:28.1) was staying awake and covering moves. “I tried to stay right with the LaSalle kid; I had run against him before and felt like if I could stay up with him I could give our anchor guy a chance,” he said. “Then I was able to pass him to stay up with the kid in the green (Mainland).

“We just had our state meet last week,” he added, “so it gave us a little bit of an advantage, instead of having to wait 3 or 4 weeks. I went out slower and tried to hang on at the end, which worked pretty good.”

Then came 4:09 1600 man Nichols, more than satisfied with his baton-taking position. “It made me happy that Magness wasn’t so close, as I knew he’d be closing in,” he said. “(But) I didn’t really think about people coming up from behind. I didn’t want to go out too fast, my main concern was to just slowly catch up.”

Going out in 2:05 and taking the lead before halfway, he did just that. Meanwhile, Magness (following Paulo Sosa and Gabe Gonzalez) had moved into 3rd with a 57.5 first lap, but he gained little if any ground on Nichols after that and had to settle for passing LaSalle’s Jason Beck into 2nd and running 4:09.

Despite the hype, H-D had its sights set on records and winning themselves. “That was one of our goals (meet record) ... also we were going for the Ohio State record and I think we got that,” he said. “We were hoping to win ... we really weren’t going to worry about anything else; we definitely thought we had a chance.”

Mainland was 3rd in 17:40.02, North Canton Hoover (OH) 4th in 17:44.56, and LaSalle 5th in 17:45.19.

Saratoga Springs displayed its familiar depth, winning without its star with a solid, consistent and come-from-behind effort. Nicole Blood is sitting out the meet with a minor hamstring injury, but her teammates still won by a big margin.

But the race wasn’t theirs right away. Turpin (OH) held the lead through the first 2-1/4 legs, before Saratoga’s Lindsey Ferguson finally took over and built a big gap for the winners. On the opener, Melanie Price of Turpin led a group of 5 contenders through in 5:09.2 to 5:09.6 for ’Toga’s Kirsten Horbach (a senior, their only upperclassman). Harvard-Westlake (CA), Clarkston (MI) and Iowa City (IA) were right there, but defending champion Bronxville was 8 seconds back. “I felt pretty good ... the first few laps,” said Horbach. “I tried to pick it up the last lap.”

The second leg saw H-L slip back and Bronxville make a charge towards the lead. Early in the final lap they were in 2nd, but Elmira’s Lindzie Foster took over that spot by the end of the leg. Meanwhile, Saratoga’s Cameron Vahanian (a freshman 3k runner who hadn’t run a 1500 all year) was the replacement for Blood, holding onto 5th with a PR 5:16.9.

On the penultimate leg, the freshman Ferguson wasted little time, moving into 2nd with a 72, then taking the lead over Turpin’s girl with a 2:31 first half. “I just wanted to get out fast and try and do my best,” she said, adding that she felt good enough that she wasn’t too concerned about being caught despite that start. She would up at 5:10.2, and several seconds ahead of Elmira.

That left it for sophomore Ruby Soloman to finish off the 20:42.74 – which she did in 5:05.0, continuing to build what became a 13-second gap. “I expected it to be a lot closer, but it was nice to have the lead and try for a good time,” she said. “(With Blood out) We were a little bit more nervous about the time we were trying to get, but we just wanted to try our best and see what we could do.”

Elmira’s Sara Rice went 5:07 to hold onto 2nd, ahead of Turpin and Olivia Jaworek (20:56.11-20:56.79). Bronxville was 4th in 21:02.15.
