Deak after his race: "I think
a miler has to be able to move with 700 yards left. They have
to be able to take the kick out of the sprinters. Milers need
drive. My plan was to come through in 2:06, but I was too focused
on the race. But that was OK, with 2:08 I was good. I started my
drive with 500 left. I felt very good."
Ryan Deak is off his high school
team for good, and plans to move to Colorado to establish residency
in hopes of running for the University of Colorado Buffalos. He
wants to train on his own "like Alan Culpepper, who sets
his own schedule and training." For the remainder of his
junior year, he will be coached by his father, Bob, who has no
coaching experience, but "ran a little in high school."
He had no harsh words for his high school Gary Droze, but intimated
that high school coaches are fine, but not for him. On the day
he was asked to leave his high school team, he had run the 4x800
and was scheduled to run the 400 and 4x400. "It was cold
and rainy, and my dad and I made the choice that it would be better
for me to call it a day and get warm." They may move to the
Boulder area, and he'll decide on high school when he knows about
state rules there.
In reference to being coached on
his own and American running in general. "If we had more
people like (Alan) Webb, we'd be in better shape. We have to take
the Webb route."
