by John Dye

The tables below show stats on favorites in events that are included in the DyeStat Elite national rankings. Stats include event, mark, name, class, school, meet date, meet name, place finished, and US 2003 indoor rank. Favorites are listed in alphabetical order.

60 meters
Deep field of America's best, with national leaders and international experience. Willie Hordge and Ivory Williams were members of Team USA's world junior record setting 4x200 relay at the World Junior Championships in Jamaica last summer. Virginia champion Joe Robinson has the season's fastest time at 55 meters, and J-Mee Samuels is 2nd at both 55 and 60 meters.

Mile
Bobby Curtis goes for a threepeat in one of the most talented and competitive fields of the meet, as last year's big junior crop of milers become seniors. Cuirtis won the last two times here with a desparate lunge at the finish line, but has no races at a mile this season. Last year's victim, Alex Tatu, also a good kicker, returns for another try as double Virginia AAA champion and US#1 at 1000 meters. Oregon's Mike McGrath leads the country at both 800 meters and a mile this season. Penn Relays and Millrose Games champion Matt DeBole, 4th here last year, is a seasoned competitor. Joaquin Chapa, son of high school 10,000 meter record holder Rudy Chapa, has the second fastest time in the country this season.

2 Miles
Another extremely deep field with last year's 2nd and 3rd place finishers, Chris Solinsky and Brian Dalpiaz, returning. Since a year ago, Solinsky stamped himself as the dominant distance runner in the nation. He ran the fastest 3200 of 2002 at Arcadia (8:48.44) in April and ran away with the Foot Locker cross country national championship in December in one of the fastest times ever. But he was beaten at AOC Raleigh in June when Bobby Lockhart surprised Solinsky with a last lap kick. This field has both front end speed and closers, with 9 Foot Locker national finalists on hand. A runner who didn't make it to San Diego will be one of Solinsky's strongest foes: Josh McDougal. After fading in the home stretch of the Foot Locker Northeast regional, the home schooled McDougal has been posting outstanding times in college and open meets. Brian Dalpiaz, who skipped Foot Locker to be sure of recuperation from an emergency appendectomy last August, has the fastest 2-mile time in the nation this season at 9:01.92. Galen Rupp, who was sick and did not finish at San Diego, ran a sensational 3000 meters in 8:12.30 US#1 just a week ago, with fellow Oregonian Alec Wall close behind in 8:14.77 US#3. Mohamed Trafeh, who doesn't get many indoor opportunities in California, made the most of the Los Angeles Invitational by doubling in the mile and 2-mile.

60 meter hurdles
Texas 5A double champion Kerron Clement has the most impressive resume, but his long legs may need more distance. He placed second on the all-time 400 meter list at 49.77 when he beat the new record holder Kenneth Ferguson in the USATF Jr Olympics last summer. Clement has no indoor times this season, and there are plenty of hot indoor hurdlers ready to challenge, headed by Jeffrey Porter 7.32, US#1 at 55 meters, and Jason Richardson 7.93, US#3 at 60 meters.

high jump
Three of the four 7-footers this season are here. It should be a duel between Mike Morrison, 2nd here last year, and Scott Sellers. Morrison, who is also US#3 in long jump, is undefeated and never under 7 feet. Sellers has had fewer indoor meets in Texas, but his best is only 1 inch below Morrison's New York Armory record 7-3.
