Laura Richenderfer and Jasmine Brooks are fortunate. They’re devotees of racewalking living in two of the few areas of America which include racewalking as an official part of the girls high school program. And so New Yorker Richenderfer, a junior at Penfield High (7:21.95) and Mainer Jasmine Brooks, a senior at Dirigo High in Peru, Maine (7:25.74), went 1-2 after quite a battle.
Brooks had won the 2002 Nike title in 7:41.97 and continued to improve but couldn’t match Richenderfer’s early speed.
“I went out a little aggressively but I think it was good generally; I got in a good pace and tried to keep it,” said Richenderfer, of the upstate Rochester area of New York, who was crowned the very first champion ofn the 2003 meet. Brooks made a good charge but couldn’t make up the gap.
“It made me really nervous.” admitted Richenderfer. “But it really pushed me, which is what I needed.
“I was out with a hip injury last year and was on the sidelines, so it was nice to be in the race.
“I’m a junior, so I saved a little bit for next year.”
Richenderfer moved to sixth on the all-time US\list and Brooks to 10th.
Spartanburg, S.C.s Erica Adams took third (7:36.43) and five ot the 10 starters broke 8 minutes. In addition to New York, Maine and South Carolina, states represented were Ohio, Wisconsin and New Jersey.
