The Menchville, Va. team of Jelyn Quick, Yvette Lewis, Theresa Faluknec and Christie Black felt its spot in the first (and unseeded) section of the three-section event seemed to indicate some lack of respect for its talents.
So these four went out and won it the hard way, taking their race in 33.75 over West Side of South Carolina, and then waiting out the other two sections.
When Winslow Township of New Jersey took the second race in 37.39 and Jackson of New Jersey the third race in 34.17 over Palm Beach Lakes, Fla.’s 34.56, Menchville was assured of the gold.
Jackson (third last year) and Palm Beach Lakes (the 2001 and 2002 winner) wound up 2-3 over-all. Westside of S.C. placed fourth in 36 flat.
Lewis had compiled a huge 48 points at last month’s Virginia state meet.. Now, she’s helped make Menchville the National champion.
“I think they tried to play us, we should have been in the seeded heat,” said Quick.
“We knew we could fly,” said Lewis. “This is my first year with this team, but these girls can fly.”
